Working Saturdays in Brooklyn: A Femme Coffee

Last Saturday, while Julia Watson was in town from San Diego, we all got together for a work day at our favorite Brooklyn internet cafe. Joining us was Kate Liederman and Elizabeth Koke. Naturally, getting all these femmes at the end of the bar turned the conversation to sex, relationships, butchness and femmeness.

For DeeDee down there: I hope you're not like everyone else because life would be awfully boring if we were all the same. I'd like to echo LBDL's comments because she expressed them so well.
What right does anyone have to judge who other people choose to date? There is a lot of hypocrisy in our own community and there is an awful lot of judging going on. What's all this talk about gender anyway? We are who we are and we're attracted to whomever were attracted to. End of story. we as humans sure love to make things more complicated than they really are.

Hi deedee~ Don't you think

Hi deedee~ Don't you think it's fabulous that we're all different... I know what you mean though, sometimes girls in our own community don't understand the dynamics involved with two femmes. It's different for us, but.... that's okay.

It would be nice to see femmes, who dig femmes, talk about it. Express why they feel the way they do, about their attractions.... but, the butch/femme relationship seems to be what most girls are comfortable talking about.

I've dealt with being called, 'hetero bait', by my own community... most of my adult my life. Maybe not in so many words, but in action. That kinda sucks.

But, I've learned to deal with it. I embrace diversity and care about all of my lesbian sisters, but deedee..... I'm just not sure everyone does when it comes to femme/femme. We're kinda like the black-femme-sheep of the lesbian family.

I have a different

I have a different perspective, LBDL. I'm happy that VPM is one of the few places I've seen the butch/femme sensibility celebrated rather than denigrated by society and even lesbian feminists (the 70s, 80s brand of feminists). All my life, I've had to resist pressure in our society to "feminize" myself to fit when I am much more comfortable in what society would characterize as a more boyish appearance. Butches are really the ones not appreciated.

Anyway, I think femme/femme is fine. We can celebrate it all.

I'm with you for that Minnie, Butches are the ones on the first line in social confrontation. And its not as if they where running the lesbian world. When i had short hair, i was accused of perpetuated the "cliché".

Good morning Minns and Yonks!! Happy Sunday......

I totally understand where you're coming from Minnie, and Yonks. I can't speak for any perspective except my own. I know that if there are fifty women in a room, there would be fifty different points of view..... and, I think that's a good thing.

Our attractions are a very personal thing. That's all I'm speaking about, attractions. Not the political/social implications so much..... Sometimes I wonder if there's a deeper reasoning involved. I'm not sure, I just wonder sometimes.

I would never judge love, and the 'laws of attraction'.
This blog just made me wonder.......where do I fit in.
