The former presidential candidate's daughter is leading the charge, along with other young Republicans, in trying to re-define the party. Last weekend, Meghan McCain spoke to the Log Cabin Republicans, the marginalized gay contingent of the GOP, and delivered remarks that energized gays and young progressives unhappy within the party.
Through her blogs on The Daily Beast, as well as her numerous media and speaking appearances, Meghan has emerged as one of the most outspoken and articulate opponents of the right-wing arm of the GOP and an unabashed supporter of gay marriage.
I was in D.C. last weekend to attend the event, and was able to capture Meghan's speech on video. One of her most quotable quotes was that she thought the "old school" members of the Republican Party in power are "scared shitless of what the future holds."

Grace - there are two things I'd like to add to the VP wishlist!
1) A 'newbie' alert, for when someone new signs in (Maybe for their first say, 5-10 comments) ... Then we will make an extra effort to be NICE and welcoming
2) (Not sure if this is possible) - but an international day/time clock ... The time differences get confusing. Also a little flag of where we are from would be interesting (corny me)
My final response to the
My final response to the discussion of the tagline "Dyke Culture in Bloom" is this:
Dear Grace, there's another donation from me in your inbox.
~THE END~
Still searching for the right brainy quote.
I know she should 'be
I know she should 'be herself' and it pains me (as a feminist) to comment on it ... but...
Meghan has that way of speaking, that sounds like she's on 'The Hills' ... Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde also springs to mind (I think it's the shade of pink lipstick).
I think she still has to learn that lesson that most girls figure out in their mid 20's ... Take a breath and lower the tone of your voice (in order to be heard and taken seriously on the job).
Gay Republican's however, are a puzzlement I will probably never figure out ... Why? Just why?
like gay christians they hate
like gay christians they hate themselves
they were born into those traditions
they're split in twain
Being gay and of the right
Being gay and of the right are not mutually exclusive IMHO.

Well, I am, as they like to
Well, I am, as they like to say where my parents are from "as bent as a nine bob note", but I don't see any conflict between that and the fact that I err, essentially, politically to the right.
If it's not possible to be a gay republican is it possible to be a straight democrat, I wonder... or am I just being facetious now?
it's a bit like jewish nazis,
it's a bit like jewish nazis, or queer nazis, for that matter, and they did exist.
the religious right has infected republicans & the rr are total homophobes. republicans have become lifestyle police. they didn't use to be.
We don't have the same
We don't have the same cross-over between religion and politics here so I guess it's a little different. Also, the gay agenda is kinda off the table as we now have "civil partnership" rights.
The right here has had some questionable views regarding homosexuality, which are obviously unacceptable. But I find the left far more unacceptable on just about everything else.

Well, when I was at University the halls of residence I lived in during my first year was featured in a programme made by the BBC called, wait for it, "Thatcher's Children"...... it was all about how my generation had only ever known a Thatcher government as she had been in office 10 years at the time it was made.
I'd have Thatcher over Brown any day, that's all I'm saying....
i wonder if you know anything
i wonder if you know anything about thatcher. people who like reagan usually don't actually know what he presided over. they were soulmates. here's a hint: she was the last world leader to attempt to lend pinochet any credibility:

I am not saying that I agree
I am not saying that I agree with everything she did - at all. And she did make some spectacularly bad decisions, especially in the latter years of her leadership. That's kind of unquestionable.
I'd still have her over Blair and Brown.
I'd be curious to know where
I'd be curious to know where you think Thatcher might have stood on civil partnerships?
Also, what about a Blair-Thatcher comparison, which seems more apt?
Blimey - you've put me on the
Blimey - you've put me on the spot there!
Okay, I think I am going to have to say that Thatcher would probably not have been a supporter of civil partnerships.
I'd have Thatcher over Blair any day too.
the Logo and
the Logo and Trademark,
Velvetpark; Dyke culture in Bloom
guys we've had a long ride with our title and trademark and I had to fight the United States Patent and Tradmark Office in order for them to let us use the word "Dyke," in our trademark.
I wrote a brief narrative about this on our about page
http://www.velvetparkmedia.com/about/
In fact a Republican Lawyer who was a a relative of a friend of mine was interested in fighting this case against the USPTO to set a precedent in favor of Queers who have re-claimed negative slurs. So he actually did the work pro-bono.
I wonder if the negative reaction to the word "dyke" is generational (everyone 40 and below see the word as affirmative), regional, or location (urban, sub-urban, country?)

English is not my mother
English is not my mother tongue so the word itself doesn't sound to me but the french word for dyke (gouine) is one of the ugliest in my language, insulting and obscene.
Anyway, do i want to call myself with insults used by my ennemies? personally, i don't but it doesn't really matter. The point is : am i ok with who i am ? and do i need one word to define myself ?
I don't like the word. It
I don't like the word. It affirms a negative stereotype. And it makes me unsure of what this site is about. Is it for more masculine women? Is *dyke* about love or control?
Having said all that, I know it's a huge deal to change the name of a site.
What exactly is the
What exactly is the stereotype you're referring to? While I know it was previously used pejoratively, the word itself carries no negativity in the sense that it doesn't connote much of anything--it doesn't, for instance, say we're lesser, stupider, fatter, etc--beyond that fact that we sleep with women. So I actually think there's a major difference in reclaiming it versus, say, the Nword.
And as far as I know the word applies to ALL lesbians, be they femme, butch or whatever. Of course femmes can 'pass' more readily so it often doesn't get applied to them--but only because people don't know they're dykes.
Good reply, Mystic. I concur
Good reply, Mystic. I concur on all points.
I am over 40 and as noted
I am over 40 and as noted this word historically has negative connotations and is still used as an insult by many people. Here's my take on it- by owning the word, we are able to take away it's power to hurt us. I learned this lesson years ago. A man in the grocery store felt it okay to insult my girlfriend and I by calling us dykes. I turned and looked at him and said "Really? What was your first clue?" He shut up and we finished our shopping.
Yup! Like most bullies, when
Yup! Like most bullies, when you take them on their own cowardice just swallows them whole.
In that instance it may have
In that instance it may have worked, but I'm still not sold on the 'embracing an insult word and taking away it's power' theory.
I almost feel like it's the 'lazy' way of fighting back.
Like rappers embracing Ni***r and calling each other that term. NOT SOLD. I also can't see myself embracing CUNT and working that into my sentences ... no matter how many times Perez Hlton (a gay man) uses that word against a woman.
There are certain words that people (not so long ago) fought to NOT be called and (I'm sure) thought they had heard the back of.
PEACE
The point is, there is no
The point is, there is no fighting back. None needed. When they can't hurt you with their words you can just live your life and that is the best revenge.
As for cunt- I don't like it as an insulting term for a woman (I have used it, but only in extreme circumstances where bitch just wasn't strong enough to express my emotions) but it's my favorite slang term for vagina. I prefer it over pussy. (Go ahead and run with that Taem, Minnie, Erin, or anyone else. I left it worded that way on purpose.)
Language is an ever-evolving thing. Just because people prefer we don't use certain words now doesn't mean that won't change. Those words could die off or they could come back into common usage. How they evolve is up to us, we can make dyke or cunt continue to be insulting terms or we can use them in a positive way.
I would be curious to find
I would be curious to find out the history of the words dyke and queer as they relate to gay* people.
Were these words chosen by gay* people as a code word gone awry or
were the words originally used by heteros [closet gays] as derogatory terms.
The history of those words ultimately bastardized by the derogatory straight world may determine whether or not you decide to reclaim those words for yourself.
*I would also like to find out why the word "gay" has been conveted by its traditional "happy" definition to a positive word that connotes homosexuality.
