The LGBT Center of New York had its annual Women’s Gala, which raised $300,000 to fund women’s programs for the Center. This is a black tie affair, studded with celesbians and policy makers. The honorees this year were actress Cherry Jones and Sally Susman. Cherry, as many of you may know, is a Tony Award-winning actress who will be playing the president in the upcoming season of 24. Sally Susman is probably less well known to most of us because she has had a career working behind the scenes in government and big business. Sally is currently the Executive VP of Global Marketing for Estée Lauder and she sits on the boards of various non-profit agencies and universities. Both Cherry and Sally bring LGBT issues front and center to the mainstream.
The event was actually the night before the writers' strike, so Cherry and her partner, actress Sarah Paulson, talk a bit about those issues in my interview with them below. And I had the opportunity to interview Bonnie Somerville, who plays a lesbian in the upcoming series Cashmere Mafia which we’ve been hearing quite a bit about. A little known fact I discovered is that Bonnie plays Caitlin Dowd, a character based upon Sally Susman.
