Northern Exposure!
I love that show! Thanks for the link!
Interesting
Hey man!
I haven't heard about that -- how fascinating! It doesn't have much of a direct connection, I believe. Or, at least, from what we know at the moment. Who knows what more research will find! Although the proton and Higgs are two very different partcles, in many ways, the Higgs is supposed...
black hole jets
Hi Tex, I promisepromise I will talk about black holes. I want that post to be real good so I'm compiling info to give ya. For now though, those are called "jets." They're giant columns of charged particles that are being ejected by the black hole. Don't get me wrong, they're not coming from inside...

Excellent suggestions!! Keep em comin!
Black hole?
Hi Tex, are you thinking there was so much matter so close together in the early Universe that we must be one big black hole because how could it not all collapse in on itself? That logic would be right, and I've expressed that same concern before, except that one big piece is missing: the Universe...
nope, we ain't all gonna die.
Hey geek4grammar,
While it is true that minuscule black holes will probably be created at the LHC, these will NOT kill us all. In fact, these tiny black holes will come into existence, then evaporate (via something called Hawking radiation -- yup, the Hawking) a mere moment later. So...
no relation, really...
Hi ZaraThustra,
So, there's no relation really. Dark matter is predicted to be (e.g. we're not positive yet) some massive, neutral particle that we haven't discovered yet. We know it must be pretty massive because we can "see" how dark matter is gravitationally attracted to objects....
Standard Model vs. String Theory
Hi Banana,
That's a great question, and not one many people ask: why is the Higgs important? The easy answer to that is, well, "it's the last piece of the standard model." So you then raised another great point, and you're rightly concerned about it: why focus on the standard model which doesn't...
t-shirt
There certainly is!
Last Christmas, my friend was in between getting me an Einstein action figure and this t-shirt. He went with the action figure because he's cheap (I ain't complainin! that action figure's awesome!), but this shirt is great!
Aliens attack!
Yeah, I've been reading and thinking a bit about Stephen Hawking's view that the best way to deal with contact with aliens is to, well, not make contact with 'em. He reasons that that's a great way to get all of humanity destroyed.
It's an interesting point of view, to say the least, and I'm...
Hello all!
Hey there! Sorry, I'm a bit new to blogging, so I didn't realize there would be so many comments so soon!
Banana, that was an excellent explanation of the Higgs boson, however I can understand why many non-scientists didn't quite comprehend it. I'm actually planning to give an LHC, part II, post...
