More Feel Good Paintings for Feel Bad Times

More Feel Good Paintings for Feel Bad Times

Tonight is the opening of Deborah Kass's second solo show at Paul Kasmin Gallery, "More Feel Good Paintings for Feel Bad Times."

This summer I visited Kass and her partner Patrica Cronin in their adjacent artist studios in Brooklyn. Kass was putting final touches on her paintings while waiting on the completion of a neon sign based on the Louise Bourgeois quote, "A woman has no place in the art world unless she proves over and over again she won't be eliminated." Ouch.

This is what I love about Kass and her work, she's often biting, sometimes acerbic, always witty, a little  second wave topped off with a whole lotta pop. She moves from commentary on art world figures like Ruscha and Warhol, to musical theater from Sondheim to Glee in seamless strokes of bright color. Kass is a trove of art world anecdotes and insight, political commentary, and big ideas, much like the art she creates.

If you are in New York tonight meet me at Kasmin, I'll be there closer to 8pm.
