Five People of 2017 Making a Difference in 2018

Looking past the darkness and wading through the chaos can be hard without the promise of light. A year of holding on to the good and creating a space for positivity so that the good can flourish and live within. Watching the news, social media, and listening to people while traveling can be draining. It is imperative to live in hope now more than ever. The choice to listen to people who wish to live by looking forward and remembering the past is a good way to do that. Creative people have been that outlet for me and their podcast, books, tv shows, and art have helped me keep hold of the light I have and live within a positive place even for a little while. Each of these people have etched out their part in this world and I am happy that they were willing to share it this year and into the next.

Shantell Martin - Artist 

My first introduction to Martin was her book Wave: A Journey Through the Sea of Imagination of the Adventurous Colorist. I was given her book as a present and then a couple months later looking up her work online and thats when I stumbled onto her youtube channel. While I still do not completely understand the meaning of her full body of work I do get the purpose. She creates a free forming continuous body of work.

“Do what YOU love because YOU deserve it…!” That’s a motto that she seems to live by. She seems to have a well that overflows with positive energy. She dares you to be original, creative and an individual.

Lena Waithe - Master of None & The Chi

If there is a break out story of visibility Waithe is the one I immediately think of. I have unknowingly consumed her work for over three years. Bones, Master of None and all the news and previews of The Chi. Her win at the Emmy’s placed a visible face on diversity with the entertainment industry. Someone can look at her and realize that there is a blueprint to follow along the way because she somehow did it.

Waithe latest project The Chi shines a light on life in Chicago and what it is to live there. From the previews the show reminds me of The Wire and I am
