Everyone Loves Hillary Now. Lesbians Say “Duh.”

The world has finally realized what lesbians have known all along: Hillary Clinton is a ROCKSTAR. Sure, we’ve been demure about our trendsetting abilities—need I mention the recent trends of the "Beiber" (aka lesbian) haircut or the "hipster/Olson-twin" (aka lesbian) plaid-shirt craze, both of which have been documented as originating in lesbian subculture? Or what about the fact that everyone’s like “OMG, Carrie Brownstein! Portlandia is so rad!” and we lesbians are like “Duh, we’ve been bffs since 1994.”

Or, if you need another example, or two, what about the fact that both Katy Perry’s and Lady Gaga’s careers took off after they performed at the Dinah?

Ellen was our favorite lesbian before she became the “People’s Choice.” And we (at Vp especially) were so on the Rachel Maddow train before it pulled into Heteroville Station.

But, I’m not letting this one go. No, I’m not. Because the world needs to realize that, even though we may not have fiscal capital (ie, the purchasing power of the “gay dollar” is in the hands of gay men, for obvious reasons that women don’t get paid as much as men, etc etc), we do possess a sizeable amount of cultural capital.

Why?

Because lesbians are trendsetters—not just for the queer world but for the straight world, too.

And the trend I want to discuss is loving Hillary, because lesbians have adored and admired her fierce, independent lifestyle the day she entered into the national spotlight during her husband’s first presidential campaign, scrunchie and all (...ok, maybe not the scrunchie).

And now the world (and by "the world" I mean "America") knows what lesbians (and Europeans) have known for over two decades. And we lesbians are like, “duh." We didn’t need (the now defunct) “Texts From Hillary” tumblr to tell us that.

“Texts From Hillary” seems to have catapulted and cemented Hill’s status as “COOL,” especially after she submitted her own post to the tumblr’s site:

Hillary’s, like, a total hipster now, all down with the interwebs-n-shit.

HilLove seems to be all over the place; this weekend alone, Maureen Dowd gave her props in the New York Times; The Daily Beast’s Howard Kurtz talked about her hot factor; and Elle Magazine published a stunning multi-page feature on
