The Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You: See “Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same” at MoMA!
Remember the Coneheads from Saturday Night Live? Now picture them all as lesbians. Now picture yourself hanging out with them at MoMA this weekend.
If you missed the amazing Rooftop and Newfest screenings of this fine Sundance film, now is your chance to catch it in NYC at the Museum of Modern Art this Saturday, the 19th, or Monday the 21st. That’s right, lesbian space aliens have gone highbrow. The film will be screening as part of its nomination for the Gotham Independent Film Awards, and the director and cast will be at both MoMA screenings, for Q&A plus afterparty.

The winner of this fine indie fest will be blessed with a full-on theater run in NYC. Wouldn’t it be awesome to see something queer made and queer themed win? Plus, I am here to tell you—this thing is seriously funny. I wish there were more clips available online to put in here, because still images really cannot fully convey the hilarity of deadpan monotone aliens working the lesbian singles scene in lower Manhattan. They go dancing at the Cubbyhole. They make out by rubbing each other’s noses. They are looking for action. Hot action. Hot earthling-on-alien action.

The basic premise of this whole hilarious romp is that the planet Zots is in danger of environmental catastrophe due to its inhabitants excessive romantic dramas. That’s right—“too big feelings” are destroying their ozone. The solution? Send the offenders to Earth, where heartbreak is a given. Once you’re dead inside, the alien leaders cheerfully explain, you’re no longer a threat to the ozone and you can come home.

Three aliens make the trip (in a spaceship made from leftover takeout containers, btw—the effects in this thing are a Mystery Science Theater 3000 wet dream), and while two of them end up falling unwillingly for each other, the third falls for an adorable, mild-mannered and socially awkward human named Jane. Hijinks ensue. I don’t wanna give away too much and spoil it for you, but suffice it to say that this film is the perfect mash-up of lo-fi New York City rom-com and kitchy sci-fi B-movie spoof. The real fun (as well as the real poignancy) comes from the realization that we all feel like aliens when we’re looking for love…especially in New York. I leave you with this parting line, space travellers:
Jane: So…are they gonna, like, beam you up or something?
Zoinks: No, I have to take the F train.
Don’t we all. Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same is playing at The Museum of Modern Art this Saturday & Monday, the 19th & 21st, in The Celeste Bartos Theater. Tickets are cheap ($12 adults, $8 students w/ ID, kids under 16 are free); and don’t forget about that queer alien afterparty, bois & grrlz. Trust me, once you’ve seen their otherworldly dance moves, you’ll understand. Happy weekending!
