Massachusetts, the first state in the country to legalize same-sex marriage, has filed a lawsuit against the federal government on the grounds that the Defense of Marriage Act "directly interferes with Massachusetts' long-standing sovereign authority to define and regulate the marital status of its residents," according to the state's Attorney General Martha Coakley.
