Hello happy readers — of which I have no idea if you number among the many or the few (read: still only Amanda T.) — I’ve decided to change things up just a little bit. I’m still going to blog just the same, but I would like to add a weekly edition.
Every week I’ll choose a physics/astronomy topic and post about it. So what would you like to know? Gimme some suggestions! Have a hankering to understand a little bit about quantum entanglement? Wondering what the hell this “dark energy” is all about? Something the matter with dark matter? Nothing is too taboo. Sockyatome (preferably in the comments)!

I've always been fascinated by
black holes....I think you and I have touched on this before.

Got a question about the star being 'eaten'. What is shooting out of the center as it is being eaten?

black hole jets
Hi Tex, I promisepromise I will talk about black holes. I want that post to be real good so I'm compiling info to give ya. For now though, those are called "jets." They're giant columns of charged particles that are being ejected by the black hole. Don't get me wrong, they're not coming from inside the black hole event horizon. Nothing that goes into the black hole ever comes out. In that video particles from the star are being pulled in and around the black hole. Moving charged particles create magnetic fields. It is believed that the black hole's tangled, spinning magnetic fields -- generated by the star's charged matter spinning around it -- causes some sort of overload that creates those ginormous jets. Really, no one knows right now. It's a pretty active area of research in astrophysics. Also, very interesting, those jets (when pointed at the Earth, so we see them in our telescopes) are some of the brightest objects in the Universe.
Great question!

Too elementary a thought, but
are you saying the 'jet' is a sort of exhaust? Or is it along the lines of 'for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction' and something had to give?

Entropy
I'd like to know more about entropy and why it matters. Pun intended.
Still searching for the right brainy quote.

I love the something the matter with dark matter...
but i would really like to understand quantum entanglement.
