When I first saw the latest youtube sensation of a straight couple, Jill Peterson and Kevin Heinz dancing down the aisle to "Forever" by Chris Brown at their wedding ceremony,
I felt conflicted. The optimistic/happy side of me got the goosebumps because it's fun, and something I might do, that is if I could legally be married and if I wanted to. Of course, I would never dance to a Chris Brown song, seeing as how he's a dick-hole abuser and recently issued a perfunctory non-apolgy "apology" for his very public abuse of girlfriend, Rihanna,
but I digress.
But then the cynical Debbie Downer side of me, the side who usually wins out in times like these, felt really annoyed. Perhaps it's the summer, the season of opposite marriage that's got me especially jaded, but I can't help but feel like my nose is being rubbed in the fact that the federal government wouldn't recognize my partner and I. It's not so much the couple who i'm hating on-I'm sure that they're cool people and this wedding dance is actually a pretty gay thing to do- it's the extreme reaction that the video is receiving. It has almost 5 million hits(!) on youtube and the bride and groom are now famous, which admittedly makes me jealous. Is there a chance they'll use their 15 minutes of fame to come out in support of gay marriage? Now that would give me the goosebumps for real.

As happy as it makes me to watch the video, I totally feel ya and I totally blogged on the same subject (regarding facebook though, not this video). If you or anyone is interested, here's my rant on the issue:

Glad to hear I'm not the only one sick of hearing about other people's marriages.
love your rant
I had a similar experience at my first day of improv class! Everyone congratulated this woman, a stranger to all of us at that point, just because she had a rock on her finger. weird.
Hate the Artist and Love the Art
I had a similar reaction to the Chris Brown track (which is also in a Doublemint Gum commercial, barf), but I couldn't keep myself from grinning ear to ear and tear up as the wedding party dorked out and cut it up on the way down the aisle. The lyrics of the song fit their whole vibe perfectly so I can't hate on them for that. Also, it's possible to hate the artist and love the art. James Brown is a wifebeater and an all-around bad guy, but who doesn't groove when his jams come on? Some of the most amazing artists in history were really dispicable human beings. I say just accept what's good and reject what's bad.

Go-Go Magic
"Lesbian" Whirlygig down the aisle!!!
A male-authority figure didn't give her away, so maybe just maybe their choreographed and Midwestern hipster flippancy will give way to a vague, pro-gay political proclamation!!!
Was the wedding before or after
Rihanna's beating? ... If after, what an odd and controversial choice.
I must admit I did love this (girl beater aside) and posted it on my facebook.
I'm just glad all my friends are married now - because I can't "bust a move" to save myself
My niece's wedding
Amy, I attended my niece's wedding in California in March and believe me, the irony was not lost on me that I should attend a wedding for a straight couple in a state that did not pass Proposition 8. It made me a bit grouchy before I left. But by the time I arrived and saw all my family, including my 80-year-old father, those thoughts went away.
It's one thing to think about this in the abstract and feel resentful towards all the straight people. It's another when your niece is standing right in front of you with joy in her eyes. She knows I'm gay, by the way, and she'd come to my wedding if I ever cared to have one, which I don't.

Civility is not a sign of weakness.
totally
Yes, I completely agree-it's very different conceptually. I have been to two weddings this summer that were beautiful, unique and because they were people I like and/or love, I even shed a tear or two.So I guess what I'm saying is, if you are a friend of mine- you can get married, if not- I hate you.
That's fair, right?
That last part made me laugh,
That last part made me laugh, Amy. ::smiley face::
Civility is not a sign of weakness.
I don't know
It's not their fault they're "straight" and "allowed" to marry.
I thought it was cute.
amy, i love your take on the
amy, i love your take on the heinousness of this, plus you offer a solution: COME OUT FOR GAY MARRIAGE, you self-congratulating homophobes-by-dint-of-exercising-a-"right"-that's-wrong-cuz-we-don't-have-it!
you encourage me to add, the music's awful, their clothes suck, they can't dance, it goes on too long.
in other words, it's NOT GAY ENOUGH!
no, really, it's neither beautiful and dignified, nor out there. but it does give heart to the girlfriend-killers-in-training and the straights who need to think they're special.
Grouch! (hah)
Grouch! (hah)

And bootylicious booties. Okay, I'll stop now. :((
*drooling*
Mmmmmmmmmm...
Please.....
don't stop!!!
I thought it was cute....
But my next thoughts were, 1) poor choice of song, 2) the clothes would be cuter (and not pink and purple, ick), and 3) if that were happening at my wedding the choreography would be way better. Then again, one of my best friends is a choreographer, so I'm at an unfair advantage I guess.
they need a totally gay
they need a totally gay makeover: fashion & interior designers, florist, live girl band, choreographer (that you would provide), dancers, one more bride, one more groom. shall i go on?
....why can't we marry? we MAKE the wedding.

There's the Erin I've been missing.
Thanks Horsey, I needed that.
Party pooper. It's precisely
Party pooper. It's precisely BECAUSE many of them can't dance and they're wearing brown suits and it's straight and white that makes it all the more fun! You think THEY don't get that?
It’s Not So You Think You Can Dance
I’m glad I'm not the only one who thinks the VP folks here should lighten up. It's not the bride and groom's fault that this video went viral. If they knew millions of people would see it they would have made sure the costumes and choreography met the high standards set by the lesbian community. [Insert snarky laugh emoticon thingy].
They did this for their families and friends. Along with all the bullshit that goes into planning a wedding, they added to their workload by staging an entrance that would be fun. Normally I hate weddings, but I would have loved being in attendance for that one.
"When you look for the bad in mankind expecting to find it, you surely will." ~ Pollyanna
I completely agree
I posted this video on my facebook profile. However, if it were my wedding, the choreography and the clothes would be better. That's personal preference (and perhaps anal-retentive OCD virgo-ness) not anything against the newlyweds and their wedding party.
Yup!
