We've all heard the news by now about Whitney Houston's tragic death over the weekend, details of which are still emerging.
I was wondering who would produce a new piece on those old lesbian rumors that WH dodged throughout the 80s and 90s, rumors that resurfaced after her ex-husband Bobby Brown's authorized biography was published in 2007. Even a friend of mine who worked in the music industry in the 80s told me about the rumors of how Whitney "partied" with women during her early touring days.
Well, this morning, The Daily Beast published the piece I was waiting for:
According to several gossip reports in recent years, it was common knowledge that Whitney and Robyn [Crawford, her personal assistant] were together; blogger Daryl Deino wrote in 2009, “Anybody who works in the recording industry knows about Whitney and Robyn’s relationship; they barely did anything to hide it during recording sessions.”
On Sunday night, Esquire posted a poignant as-told-to obituary by Crawford. In it, she said: “I have never spoken about her until now. And she knew I wouldn’t. She was a loyal friend, and she knew I was never going to be disloyal to her. I was never going to betray her. Now I can’t believe that I’m never going to hug her or hear her laughter again. I loved her laughter, and that’s what I miss most, that’s what I miss already.”

I didn't realise
BB was only 23 when he married Whitney (28)...
I remember in Whitney's last Oprah interview, one line that stuck out for me was when she said she was "conforming to a lifestyle". Interesting choice of words.
I think like Aaliyah, MJ and countless rumoured actors/singers who set off gaydars and died before they were old, Whitney probably accepted she would never get to be openly gay. So went with her religion (and record company) when the pressure was on.... and that is totally sad
Whitney mentions Robyn briefly in this:

ZOMG, JR, I LURV aaliyah -- and I started loving her after the release of her music video for the super-lesbianic song "If Your Girl Only Knew" ("and if your girl could only see, / that you be callin' me, / gettin' fresh with me" ... SWEET JEEBUS!)
Thanks for posting that, Joanne. :)
I've never seen that before.
Good article, thanks for the
Good article, thanks for the link. Even if she was straight, the drugs and all still made her life story tragic. If she was also struggling with being closeted, that just makes it sadder still.
Agree, Conlite
I always thought she was singing about a woman in this song, but what the f ck do I know...
