The right-wing religious fundamentalist types keep coming up with ever-new ways to heave their agenda onto the public. There was the recent kerfuffle in Texas over school text books and what would be the social studies curriculum for students in the Lonestar State. One of the members of the Texas State Board of Education, Don McLeroy, was on a neo-conservative/creationist bender.
According to the New York Times: McLeroy moved that Margaret Sanger, the birth-control pioneer, be included because she “and her followers promoted eugenics,” that language be inserted about Ronald Reagan’s “leadership in restoring national confidence” following Jimmy Carter’s presidency and that students be instructed to “describe the causes and key organizations and individuals of the conservative resurgence of the 1980s and 1990s, including Phyllis Schlafly, the Contract With America, the Heritage Foundation, the Moral Majority and the National Rifle Association.” The injection of partisan politics into education went so far that at one point another Republican board member burst out in seemingly embarrassed exasperation, “Guys, you’re rewriting history now!” Nevertheless, most of McLeroy’s proposed amendments passed by a show of hands.
McLeroy soon after lost his bid for re-election.
The current bid for Creationist Fascist of the Week comes from Florida state Rep. Stephen Precourt. He's proposing that film and television projects featuring "nontraditional family values" be ineligible to receive tax incentives from the state under a $75 million package that the legislators are hoping will woo productions to the Sunshine State.
Apparently, when Precourt thinks of his home state, he thinks of Mayberry from The Andy Griffith Show: "That's when I grew up — the '60s. That's what life was like. I want Florida to be known for making those kinds of movies: Disney movies for kids and all that stuff. Like it used to be, you know?"

Dexter family values = nontraditional.
When I think of Florida, I think of Dexter. And I'm pretty sure Debra Morgan's potty mouth wouldn't pass muster with Precourt. He's certain to find fault in dialogue like, “Holy Mary mother of fuck, that's good.” If not that, then surely Dexter's killing binges will disqualify the show. I wonder about what's his face from CSI: Miami. He should be disqualified just for being annoying, although that's not one of the official taboos.
Here's the Precourt list of prohibitions: Smoking, sex, nudity, profane language, and "obscene" productions as defined by the state's sex crime laws. (Read: homos.)
Florida Family Policy Council President John Stemberger says it straight out that those nontraditional family values means everything from "drug abuse to excessive drunkenness to homosexual families." After all, everyone knows there's no drunkenness in traditional families, right?

More for us
Fine, let Precourt get his way and see how many movies get made in Florida. More for Massachusetts I say--we've been on quite a binge since new tax incentives went into effect a couple years ago. So if you're wondering why you suddenly see Boston all over the place, it ain't a coincidence!

Okay...he does realize that life wasn't really "like" that doesn't he? Has he never seen the movie "Far From Heaven?"

I had some neighbors who really did have 2 twin beds in their master bedroom, because it was proper to sleep separate. I'm thinking "I Love Lucy" made an impact on lots of new newlyweds in the 50's. Too bad he banished his eldest daughter from the family because she fell in love with a handicapped man - she was a nurse and good hearted. One never knows, she might not have passed away before her father, if she had a supporting family.
He was full of love...I wonder if the 50's TV and film were different and more "rounded" and had showed some actual truths of the complexities of life, maybe some families and family memebers might be more accepting and understanding to their own complex family life.

my brother wants me to move to austin to be closer. i considered it for a time, but i just don't think i can do it. i'd still be living in texas. i was just in dallas and it seemed pretty gay but still, no.
Maybe Houston?
I have lezzie friends in both Dallas and Austin, but Houston just elected one. Maybe that's your play.

It was very nice...Gay Houston is very kind and friendly... But I do love the South!

i figure
the only reason i would move to texas would be to be closer to my brother but i don't think it's worth it. any way it will be a few years until i finish school. i'm going to go see your show next week btdubs.
I love New York. I want to
I love New York. I want to work at the New York Public Library. Every week they're tweeting about what famous actor/director is shooting a scene in that Library. They get all the fun.

Yeah all the time but I'm
Yeah all the time but I'm very lucky to have the job that I do in this economy with libraries reducing hours and closing all over the US. I'll have to wait until the economy/job market improves. Who knows when that will be.

barefoot and pregnant
states like texas should put some money into their sex education. if they want to preach abstinence*, whatever but at least teach the kids what's going on with their bodies.
i worked in a resturant in baltimore with a girl from austin. her and her boyfriend used the "pull out" birth control method. wouldn't you know it, she got knocked up. when she told me she thought she was pregnant i took her to rite aid to get a test, and just in case she wasn't baking a bun, i showed her where the condoms were.
so she went to the doctor and it was confirmed that she was indeed pregnant. she said "i found out where the baby grows! in the uterus." uhhh...where did you think it grew, in your stomach? unfortunately, before she knew she was pregnant (who knows how long it took her to figure it out), being the chefs that we were, there was a lot of drinking and smoking going on. alcohol+cigarettes+70 hours a week of hard physcial labor = not a suitable environment for a baby and she had a miscarriage.
*abstinence clearly does not work. my brother lives in texas and he just got engaged to this girl that is in her early twenties. she told me that out of the 15 girls in her group from high school, only 2 of them don't have children. BHB (babies having babies)
Wow
And Austin is a fairly progressive place. It's all incredibly terrifying. Using religious fundamentalism as a political weapon and a public policy basis is not okay by me.
Give me San Francisco values anyday!

Hey Kelly,
Have you been following the Roy Ashburn story? I'm conflicted on that one. I feel angry when gay Republicans hide who they are and vote against our rights, but on the other hand I feel bad for them. I can't fathom keeping my homosexuality a secret like that. I also can't understand why so many gays and lesbians tried to cover for him.
"Fight Prime Time. Read a Book"
Yeah
I've followed it a bit. I get pretty outraged by that stuff. He's obviously a self-hating homo. Sure, it's sad, but he should be in therapy, not in office... not if he's going to govern based on his hate-filled biases.
