If aliens were to land on this planet, they would gather from our films that women lose all value after the age of 25, and their sole purpose in life is to be fuckable. They do not get angry unless there is something chemically imbalanced in what little brain they have.

They are not unpleasant. They don’t wreak their blowouts. They are hairless from their lower eyelids down. And most importantly they do not ever, EVER choose a woman over a man unless it’s an experiment. Then it’s more than okay. And of course the lesbian the lead once experimented with either kills herself, or goes off with someone less attractive.

After ten too many of these films, you and your best friend are this close to going underground, living off the grid, growing your own veggies, rolling your own tampons. But before going there, the two of you spend whatever free time between your collective jobs writing, filming and editing your own film. You call upon your friends who jump in, donating all their creative skills because this is their chance to say something that just isn’t being said. Tempers may flare, the day may grow long, the scene may not work out exactly as you plan but you forge ahead because, dammit, women everywhere need to see that these films CAN be made and DO matter. And what’s more, they can be very, very good.

And then, right before it’s done, some cretin puts a rough, unfinished copy on the internet. Let the downloads begin.

This is what happened with Itty Bitty Titty Committee.

You’ll recall our article about this little gem. The divine humans that made this film possible are all part of POWER UP

(Professional Organization of Women in Entertainment Reaching Up) a nonprofit organization geared towards challenging perception through film. POWER UP's mission is to promote the visibility and integration of gay women

in entertainment, the arts and all forms of media.

Any self-respecting dyke, hell, any self-respecting woman should join this organization because everything they do, they do for you. If this seems lofty of me to say, then think of all the major studios with their hefty accounts who do NOT do films for you. Jeff Robinov, president of Warner Bros Studios, released a statement saying there would be no more films with female leads as they don’t bring in the numbers. Whether he’s

Anna, you are so spot

Anna, you are so spot on!

When I first left the US Army, I wrote computer programs for robotics (my regular job) and on my own creating business and communications applications. While I was paid well by my employer for their stuff, they owned it. I gave up on writing stuff independently because I found it spreading through BBS sites (the early internet, tells you how long ago that was).

Several years later, I got involved with video production. Mainly, I did video resumes for the "local" band scene in Southern California. I would also do news and issue segments for local college stations. My business model was based upon making money from sales of CD's and videos, plus a local cable show through advertisement revenues. This failed within two years due to P2P file swapping, a polite name for piracy.

Not very long ago, I began writing about my observations of the world as I saw it. On this, I never intended to make any money. Within a few months or so, I would find someone else simply copied my work, changed a few identifying details, and published it, for money, as their own. While technically this is plagiarism, to me it is no different from piracy.

The first two examples caused me to have to change careers entirely in order to support myself. The last one leaves me feeling intellectually raped. These were my private observations I shared with the world, stolen from me and sold for money by someone who took credit for my effort. I didn't want money, and for certain I'm not seeking publicity or fame (two things that scare me) for what I write in this area. But, for someone who could not have possibly seen the world that way to steal my very thoughts and claim them as their own, and make money off them, well, it offends me.

On the issue of bars and nightclubs playing shows and movies: Did they pay for the license to do that? I seriously doubt it. They are stealing from the content creators in order to get you to give them money, be it a for cover charge, your drinks, your food, that game of pool or darts, etc. They are making money off the work of others, without compensating those others. It is one aspect of piracy, and it is illegal under state, federal, and international law.

We need to support each other, not steal from each other. We also need to support the people, groups, businesses, etc. that support us. Pay for the CD, DVD, or book. Tell others about what you found that you like. Click the ads of sponsors on web sites you like to visit, so they can get paid. Even better, buy something through those web site ads. Tell the sponsors of your favorite radio or TV show you appreciate their support, and buy something from them. If you must borrow from someone else's work, make sure to credit them.

you said it anna. POWER UP is da bomb, and they're doing it all for us-- being part of a constituency IS a responsibility! This is exactly what Rose Troche told us at the Q-MeCon, just to tie it back Wink

Now if only there was a way to keep South of Nowhere on the air...

Anna, wow...this sounds like

Anna, wow...this sounds like a great film. Cheerleader, babbit's first film is my coming out movie so she is awesome.

I don't get why people would pirate a film like this....I am afraid of the virus's that are built in....but more importantly we as women, film fans, lesbians, citizans and fans of her great work should try to fuck her and hurt her from making more films for us.

English is my second languge so sorrt bout some spelling or grammer.

I saw the Itty Bitty Titty

I saw the Itty Bitty Titty Committy at a screening and was really impressed. This is a great movie showing that there is more in life than just being a woman, or just being gay. this is a great movie about a political issue and Jamie Babbit does a great job directing it in between comedy and a political movie. One way or the other this movie makes you think about life. But even more important than that: The movie is fun to watch. I had a great time, the soundtrack is amazing, the actresses are doing a great job (and besides are really hot) and I think since a long time a movie made me think, again. So - Girls go and check that movie out!
