As it turned out

We left the games to the kids.  The adults we too busy getting a kick out of just being together.  I have the BEST family! 2 long lost cousins showed up. Man!  Haven't see them in at least 20 years!

That said, we are all on notice that my cousin's annual bbq is No excuses, No prisoners.

Excuse me, I have to go read the dictionary now...

There's a thin line...still...

I went camping for the weekend but it was only when we were all back home watching the (rather boring) men's final yesterday that we remembered it was "the 4th of July"!

SMBrown's picture

Both finals were pretty

Both finals were pretty flat--all the fireworks were in the first week of play this year I guess.

Sorry 'bout Murray...   Sad

Steph's picture

Yeah, the first week was

Yeah, the first week was quite something!

Nadal was just way too good for Murray and he (Murray) seems to fold mentally when the pressure is really on....

"Personalities"

We need some "personalities" in tennis - such as Connors, Navratilova, Evert, greasy Borg (if the man would've just bathed he wouldn't have had so many infections), Billie Jean, McEnroe, Lendl (man never wore the same shirt twice) Agassi, Goolagong.....right now, it's just a bit boring to me! Who was the first loud "grunter"? Monica Seles?

Agreed agreed agreed!!!!

Agreed agreed agreed!!!!  Especially the women's side...they seem to me like cookie cutter players (except for the Williams sisters--and they could do more to grow the sport).  Where are the rivalries?  The household names?  The game changers?  I miss Evert-Navratilova.

It is what it is.

SMBrown's picture

'Personalities' usually

'Personalities' usually develop as the result of great rivalries--it's contrast that illuminates playing style, temperament, etc.  Borg was pretty boring, but his icy temperament was the perfect foil for fiery Connors, and then of course volatile  McEnroe.  Similarly Evert and Navratilova were a study in contrasts: baseliner vs. serve and volleyer, steady vs. streaky, femme vs. butch.  Agassi was admittedly a pop culture phenom before his rivalry with Sampras, but it's that pairing that made him a tennis legend.

Before Nadal came along, RFed may have been the greatest to play the game, but I didn't give a hoot.  On his own he was a snooze.  But add the hot-blooded Spaniard to the mix and voila! I suddenly enjoy Roger's cat-like stealth.

I'm actually finding the men's side right now pretty darn interesting because there's a lot of depth.  The women's side, not so much.  Clijsters and Henin returning definitely helps, but they're not quite back in consistent form yet.  It was nice to see some new faces in the French Open final, but both Stosur and Schiavone lost in the first round of Wimbledon.   Will the Williams sisters continue to dominate because of the vacuum, or will someone finally step up to challenge them?

Steph's picture

I tend to agree - there are

I tend to agree - there are some fantastic "technical" players at the moment, but there isn't much spark. Murray, bless him, isn't exactly going to set the world on fire!

See there!

Tradition

Twenty-two years ago, the NPR staff started reading the Declaration of Independence for Independence Day. Here's this year's reading:

Still searching for the right brainy quote.

Speaking of different personalities on Vp....

you link a reading of the Declaration of Independence and I link the longest kiss on film that just happens to be by two lesbians!  I still think you're the perv!     heheheheheeeeeee

Yeah, I still get a tingle from how we told King George to take a flying leap! haha

Still searching for the right brainy quote.

SMBrown's picture

Scary 4th of July fact:

Scary 4th of July fact:  According to a recent Marist poll, 26% of Americans (and a whopping 40% of those age 18-29) don't know we told King George to take a flying leap!  i.e, they don't know from whom America won its independence.

I wish they'd do a follow-up poll in Britain....

Steph's picture

You'd get a single digit

You'd get a single digit percentage if you did a poll here......

SMBrown's picture

Really?  I tend to think that

Really?  I tend to think that those who lose the war obsess about it more and hence remember all the gory details better.  Plus, isn't the study of history in the Brit's blood?

Steph's picture

I'm probably letting my utter

I'm probably letting my utter dismay at the demise of education system tarnish my view! Certainly the under thirty year olds wouldn't have much of a clue. (But If I am totally honest my knowledge of this particular part of history is patchy! My feeble excuse is that we focussed on WWII when I was at school! There is so much to learn when there are 2000 years to study!)

Not2Taem's picture

No Way!

So you're saying that they actually don't know it at all, not just that that is why we celebrate the 4th? That is alarming.   Shock

SMBrown's picture

Don't know it at

Don't know it at all:

http://rawstory.com/rs/2010/0703/onequarter-gained-independence/

There's a link that gives more demographic info:  I was pleased, but I can't say surprised, that by region the Northeast scored the highest.  But I was DISMAYED that overall only 67% of our fair gender know, vis a vis 81% for the men.   Shock

Not2Taem's picture

Reenactment geeks

are largely male. Also, pitiful as it is, I have been classes where teacher expect male students to be more interested in Science and Social Studies than females. I know: It sucks!

** I'm sure New England gets a score boost from all of the emphasis on local history. At times like this, I miss my little corner of the world.**

With the folks

I am with my folks for the Fourth! Mom shared a good corn salad recipe with me this evening. If it is not pouring rain tomorrow we are going to a parade and a picnic.

Rain

Hey, who ordered rain for July 4th? I hope my family picked an alternative indoor spot for the picnic. I love picnics.

Absolutely nothing....

Hah. I think that's what I do best. The sets are supposed to be excellent tomorrow, so I'll be surfing in the morning, and hoping that my gf makes her awesome potato salad that I love.

We'll chill a bottle of wine, and sit on the beach at sunset... That's what we do most evenings, but tomorrow night - we'll be doing it with our fabulous neighbors, and we'll watch their little rug rats blow their fingers off with illegal fireworks. It'll be a fun night!

Seriously. Enjoy, and stay safe....   Smile

Serena Wins Wimbledon

" With her bountiful and splendid tools all polished and in full working order, including an intimidating serve that brought her tournament record to 89 aces, Williams became the queen of Wimbledon for a fourth time by drubbing Zvonareva, 6-3, 6-2, at Centre Court."

We were going to go down to see fireworks, but it's prob going to be about 100+ degrees here tomorrow night. So we're going to a friend's house to live in their pool for the evening instead.

Off topic question...

you know those wild hairs that grow on your chin, etc? How long will they get if you don't pull 'em out?

Good question

I think my record is just under an inch, found by a friend, hiding where I couldn't see the little bugger.
