"If you deny any affinity with another person or kind of person, if you declare it to be wholly different from yourself—as men have done to women, and class has done to class, and nation has done to nation—you may hate it, or deify it; but in either case you have denied its spiritual equality, and its human reality. You have made it into a thing, to which the only possible relationship is a power relationship. And thus you have fatally improverished your own reality. You have, in fact, alienated yourself." And now I won't be watching, so I guess we cancel each other out. I love Ellen, but by her own admission she knows nothing more about music than the average person. Well, the show already has millions of 'average' judges that vote every week. I don't think it needs one more. Thumbs down, sorry...
Mysty, are you really stopping watching because of Ellen being invited to be a judge, or do you have other reasons for being over the show? I guess I've always thought of the judges as being there in part to offer constructive/supportive feedback to the contestants, and the other half just for pure entertainment value. And since Paula was mostly there for sweetness and entertainment value, I feel like Ellen could potentially add a really refreshing dose of positive energy to the group. In short, she may not know much about music, but she's clever as hell and I think she'll make the show even more fun than it already is. And THAT is entertainment gold. I also predict that, from time to time, she will bring out the softer side of Simon, which should be a hoot.

Jules, I guess my interest in IDOL has been on the wane anyway, but everything about Ellen being there just feels wrong. I could totally be off-base, but I think she's too 'big' of a personality and will upset a sort of delicate balance. Also, there's just the over-exposure factor--I see her in the morning (if I want to), I don't really need to see her at night too. And despite her battiness I actually thought Paula gave the most musically constructive and insightful critiques of the three (or four) judges. I know everybody paid attention to how 'nice' (or batty) she was, but she managed to be nice and still be discerning. And I really don't want/need more entertainment--I like to focus on the contestants and the music, and the less schtick the better.
I DO like when they have guest judges--especially when they have strong music credentials...
but that's the problem with lesbian music/ian's ... other than Melissa, KD, Tracy or possibly Tegan & Sara ... the target audience of Idol wouldn't have a clue who the others are.

That I feel strong enough to hear your tentative and groping words. That we both know we are trying, all the time, to extend the possibilities of truth between us.

And Ellen won't be falling over from whatever drug she's been ingesting. Or becoming incomprehensible.
Now you won't be watching?
So a lesbian is picked to join a show (that goes out into every straight living room in the world) and you stop watching?

I see Ellen as being as knowledgeable about music as Simon Cowell, who only ended up in the biz because his father was a music industry executive.
