What was the last movie you saw in the theater? Was it good?

The Lovely Bones

I didn't expect to like it, because of the critics opinions ... but it was quite emotional.  I thought about people who've lost daughters to murder and how it might be comforting to them Innocent

Away we go.

I saw this last month in a little seaside theatre in North Norfolk - it only holds about 50 - infact it is called Sheringham Little Theatre. It takes so long for films to get to the provinces in rural England! It was an unexpected joy to watch and hilariously funny in places - although also deep and provoking in its question about finding/making a home. It is the first film I have seen that the very first, totally unexplained shot is cunnilingus - and him "tactfully" telling her she tastes different to normal!!??!! I like that it wasn't about falling in love or getting pregnant it was down the road in a life story  - which was refreshing and engaging. I'd watch it again - and will probably buy the DVD, but nothing could live up to the atmosphere of that quaint little theatre - only Broadstairs in Kent is cuter!

!

i can't even remember the last movie i saw in the theatre, let alone a good one! it was probably at least 500 days ago.

i'm still waiting to see avatar in imax here. shanghai got pissed that avatar was (by capitalism's demand and supply) hoarding all the slots on the only imax theatre here, so they communisted it up and now you can see a movie about Confucious instead...

tickets are being scalped from like 20USD to 50USD here per seat...which is ten to fifty times the price of buying a bootlegged DVD in the market place, and the market is definitely taking it

I'm confused

I thought you ran your own business in Texas? Do you also live in Shanghai? Hope you are happy where ever you are. I do often get information muddled !??!?

Nine

The production numbers were stunning. The plot was weak (not all that surprising seeing as about half the original numbers and a great deal of the storyline from the original musical were cut) though. Never liked Fergie much, but I have to admit her performance was amazing in this film. She has more talent than I'd ever realized.

Marion Cotillard was touching, as well. Nicole Kidman and Sophia Loren didn't really have enough time onscreen to comment on; Danie Day-Lewis, Penelope Cruz and Kate Hudson gave decent performances. I love Judi Dench in pretty much anything, but I don't really understand the casting choice in this case, and anyway, her film performances can't hold a candle to her work in the theatre (I was lucky enough to see her in All's Well That Ends Well, in London six years ago and was completely blown away by her stage presence).

Overall the individual performances ranged from fine to excellent, but the film just didn't work, in my opinion. It was visually captivating, and worth seeing on a big screen from that standpoint, but ultimately left me disappointed.

The Hurt Locker.  Had to see

The Hurt Locker.  Had to see it before the Oscars--I generally don't seek out war movies, but wanted to see a woman's take on war.  Well worth seeing--didn't feel like a typical war movie....

CT and I saw Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland over the weekend. It was gorgeous, charming, funny and far more satisfying, character-wise, than any other version I've seen. But I was hoping for a little more meat to the story than what was there.

Invictus

The last movie I saw at the theater was Invictus, the story of South Africa's National Rugby Team in 1995, starring Morgan Freedman as Nelson Mandela. It was a good movie, not a great movie. Glad I went to see it.

Civility is not a sign of weakness.

The Book of Eli.  It was a

The Book of Eli.  It was a stylish allegory about a man protecting the Bible after the apocalypse.  I liked the references to books and preserving knowledge...there's even a Gutenberg reference involving the printing press.

Some really entertaining moments and good acting, but the storytelling was average and it had a feeling of "self-importance" that was unwarranted.  The plot and dialogue weren't strong enough to support it.

I still felt that way about the movie though.

She has a small but important

She has a small but important role and she's good.

Mila Kunis is a good actor but she seems really miscast here. She looks too perfect and stylish and acts too "MTV" for a person who is supposed to be living in poor conditions after an apocalypse.

The Lovely Bones.  It was

The Lovely Bones.  It was better than I expected it to be based on what I'd read about how the story was edited to get a PG rating.  Of course it was visually stunning, but I expected nothing less from Peter Jackson and WETA.

What about Ruth?

Did they make her straight? I've been worried they would....

Robin Rigby's picture

They didn't get into her

They didn't get into her character much at all.  Other than her connection to Susie, she was practically non-existent.  I wondered as I was watching if the later scenes when she leaves PA and comes out would be included but that last part of the novel was cut altogether, not just for her character.  It's always the case that transporting a novel to the screen means characters and scenes have to be left behind.

That's too bad

I imagine a lesbian storyline might interfere with the PG rating anyway. I'm still interested in seeing it, but won't get my hopes up that it's true to the novel.
