Despite having the whirlwind sex life of a sea turtle, I still get tested yearly, as well as every time I suspect exposure (HIV and Hepatitis kills a lot of medical personnel, especially those who work ER/Trauma).
I have also always required potential partners to be tested since the test was first available, before anything beyond kissing or hugging happens. Any potential partner who refuses (has happened twice) gets relegated to "just friends" status very quickly.
What's weird is lately, I've been encountering "bug chasers." I'm told they think I have AIDS because of my unusual health problems, and they want to "catch" it. When they find out I'm not positive, and I just have a couple of particular rare forms of cancer, they actually get upset!
I've known too many lesbians that live in denial of their ability to contract Aids/HIV.... I lost a very good friend in 1991. She was bi, and continually had unprotected sex with bi guys. It's heartbreaking to watch a friend suffer - and then pass from something that could have been prevented...
Education means nothing if people don't listen and act responsibly. I will always miss her and her laughter....

"She was bi, and continually had unprotected sex with bi guys."
Doesn't matter if the guys were bi or not, but did she ever say why she did this? We all do some stupid things sexually, but there are some people who just go above and beyond, even when they know better, and I always wonder what the hell they are thinking.
"Doesn't matter if the guys were bi or not, but did she ever say why she did this?"
Quite honestly Skate, it did matter if the guys were bi. Their probable exposure to HIV/Aids was, statistically, much higher than had she chosen to be with hetero guys. Given her proclivity for risky, unprotected sex, all of us who cared about her were concerned for her health and safety...
No, she never explained her reasoning for choosing risky sex partners. But she did like excitement, and said that she found conventional sexual encounters boring. I wish that she would have talked about it more than she did.... You're right though, we all do stupid things sexually at some point in our lives. Hopefully, they're not life threatening.

I don't know enough about the statistics to say. With AIDS there is so much hype and propaganda that it's almost impossible to tell what's true or isn't.
This was a while back. Her exposure occurred at some point in the mid to late 1980's. At that time in this country, heterosexual exposure to HIV/Aids was predominantly seen in high risk communities such as iv drug users, those who frequented prostitutes, and those who had casual, multiple sexual partners. The majority of heterosexuals were isolated from exposure. Of course, that's changed - but, when HIV/Aids began to emerge in this country, the gay community carried a severe and disproportionate number of victims...that's neither hype, nor propaganda.
Thanks for the dialog Skate...I appreciate having the ability to discuss important subjects.

"The church teaches that although sexual orientation is innate and is not a "choice," God’s plan for gays and lesbians is that they should forsake intimate relationships and lead solitary lives."
The church mentioned above is the Catholic church....another thought for a business...entire line of church approved apparati, oils, lotions, etc for gay and lesbian solitary time!

I've been tested regularly since 1989

Yes I have...
And, I would expect nothing less of any partner.
