Blending 1950s white-urban chic with the 21st century hipster (just look at those glasses!), Michael Kors has offered us his 2013 "pre-fall" collection. I am a Kors fanatic, and, while the elitist in me finds his ever-increasing commericalization a bit depressing, the financially destitute academic adjunct that I am LOVES it—I love that Kors shops are popping up like Starbucks across the U.S., and that I can even find his clothes in department stores.
For this lesbian, his 2012 Fall collection was a bit disappointing; perhaps it was the animal prints that I found too kitschy and too opposed to the animal lover in me.
Kors excels with his structured designs, especially when he works with leather (yes, I know...this animal lover, let it be known, prefers faux leather to the real), and his 2013 pre-fall collection offers some of this ecclectic style:
Leather vest yes please
I have, for a solid year or so, contemplated the idea of "lesbian fashion," a particular lesbian style. I think, in the vein of the late-great Barbara Johnson, what is "lesbian" can only be determined subjectively by the viewer—it is each and every viewer who decides what "reads" as lesbian to her.
Flipping through Kors designs (including the one pictured above), here are the ones that I feel read most lesbionic...otherwise known as the ones I think Jenna Lyons (and myself) would wear....
Hipsters black framed glasses, boy shirt, high-waisted pants
Judging by the image: mohair sweater, cropped leather pants, and more cat-hipster shades!
A good trenchcoat for ALL THE LESBIANS!
