We've talked a lot about female masculinity on Velvetpark, lets now turn our gaze on male femininity. Opening tonight at the Leslie/Lohman Gallery in New York City are the portraits of photographer Sophia Wallace. I've known Sophia for many years, she shot for Vp in our magazine days and I always admired her ability to capture crisp, beautiful portraits, no matter if the sitter were a famous performer or the boi next door.
Wallace's solo show, "The New Masculine" curated by Cora Lambert, is a series of stark, iconic large scale photographs. The images on view tonight display a new level of skill and maturity from this artist that reveals the beauty in vulnerability.

Opening reception: Tuesday, October 12, 6 PM
On view: Tuesday, October 6 - December 8

She's good

wonderful
So sorry to have missed the show's opening.
I love how these are framed. Each sitter's gaze disrupts the statuesque male femininity we're used to seeing in popular ads for luxury fragrance, eye wear, jeans, etc. Will definitely check out the show.

When it comes to photography,
When it comes to photography, I’m the first to admit I haven’t a clue. Still, I love Sophia’s work because her pictures actually speak to me, if that makes any sense.
The pictures above and those on her tumblr which are part of this show, for once, make me feel a little gutted that I don't live in New York...
