Kristin Chenoweth Tells Newsweek to Suck It

Kristin Chenoweth Tells Newsweek to Suck It

Hell hath no fury like a pint-sized singing sensation whose gays have been scorned! Dude. Kristin Chenoweth is PISSED OFF! Why, you ask? Because Newsweek printed an astoundingly douchey article purporting that gay and lesbian actors are "never" convincing when they "play straight." Especially after those sneaky sidewinders come out of the closet, doggone-it!

Poor Ramin Setoodeh. Apparently, once he knows a performer to be an enthusiast of the love that dare not speak its fierceness (which he may or may not partake of himself), he just can't wrap his head around the idea of such a person batting for the other team, even for pretendsies! Witness his impressive powers of de-douche-cton firsthand in this excerpt taken directly from his article, entitled "Straight Jacket". (FYI, he's talking about Sean Hayes, best known as Jack from Will and Grace and currently starring on Broadway opposite our girl Chenoweth in the revival of Promises, Promises.)

Setoodeh writes: "Hayes is among Hollywood's best verbal slapstickers, but his sexual orientation is part of who he is, and also part of his charm. (The fact that he only came out of the closet just before Promises was another one of those Ricky Martin-duh moments.) But frankly, it's weird seeing Hayes play straight. He comes off as wooden and insincere, like he's trying to hide something, which of course he is. Even the play's most hilarious scene, when Chuck tries to pick up a drunk woman at a bar, devolves into unintentional camp. Is it funny because of all the '60s-era one-liners, or because the woman is so drunk (and clueless) that she agrees to go home with a guy we all know is gay?"

Sean Hayes, International Man of International Male

There's so much I could say about the rampant asshattery and obtuseness of this dude's argument, but I've had two margaritas tonight and I think KriChen has it covered spectacularly, so I'mma let her say it instead. Here is her written response to Setoodeh's article in its entirety, as run over at BroadwayWorld.com:

"As a longtime fan of Newsweek and as the actress currently starring opposite the incredibly talented (and sexy!) Sean Hayes in the Broadway revival of 'Promises, Promises,' I was shocked on many levels to see Newsweek publishing Ramin Setoodeh's horrendously homophobic 'Straight Jacket,'

The idea that straight actors

The idea that straight actors pull off playing gay so easily, or well, is also a bunch of BS.

suck it, Newsweek!

yeah, I read that article when it came out-- and also, isn't Ramin Setoodeh openly gay, not maybe gay? I thought the main issue was his internalized homophobia, which he seems to dense to notice himself. yeah. I thought his "best" (really worst, but best "haha you're a douchebag") line was when he pondered why there "weren't any successful out actors," but the way he said it, he implied that the reason was that they all knew they'd never be able to "fool" people into thinking they were straight in any of their roles. yeah, hello, it's called acting.

you go, KriChen. and for the record, I saw spring awakening on broadway, and aside from being permanently mesmerized by lea michele, I had absolutely no idea that jonathan groff was a fairy queen. not even a blip on the ol' gaydar. why? oh, yes, because he was acting. the fact that Setoodeh insists that straight actors can play gay, but not vice-versa, is just so ridonkulous that it's obvious he's a self-hater. like freud, the jewish anti-semite, who called all religious acts (such as daily prayer or wrapping tefillin) a form of OCD. I think he may have had some unresolved issues with the phallus, too... Wink

Kristin Chenoweth is

Kristin Chenoweth is officially my favorite actress. I was so excited to see her comeback on Glee! She not only is a comedic genius but now I learn, also a fervent activist for gay rights! I love her.

Kristin Chenoweth:

A credit to the human race ... and to Oklahoma (I believe she was born in suburban OKC).

See, we do produce the occasional smart person.

Aww

I <3 Kristin Chenoweth. Idina Menzel is fast becoming my celebrity crush, so I'm seeing lots of Kristin in the youtube clips I'm watching obsessively. Wondering if I need to try and see Ask the Dust. Idina and Salma Hayek in the same film? Frankly, I don't think I care if it's good or not....

I love that Kristin's willing to stand up for the LGBT community even if it means some of her more conservative Christian fans give her a hard time.

Could I have loved Kristen

Could I have loved Kristen Chenoweth more?  I didn't think so, but she just made a liar out of me.

So has his writer never heard

So has this writer never heard of Rock Hudson? Montgomery Clift?

The part the kills me is the

The part the kills me is the writer acts like gay actors don't exist until they come out of the closet. There are undoubtedly TONS of queers playing straight that he just doesn't know about.

And notice that he neglected to mention Cherry Jones, Portia de Rossi, and Jane Lynch. Why? Oh, right. Because they all continue to be hugely successful at playing straight chicks post-coming out.

He probably neglected to

He probably neglected to mention them because to him they're invisible...
