The Kel Word: Brandi Carlile's "Give Up the Ghost"

I originally heard about Brandi Carlile from a DJ friend years ago when she first emerged. At the time, I felt like I needed another female singer-songwriter in my collection like I needed another 20 pounds of belly fat. So I refused to even check her out. Then, about a year-and-a-half ago, I saw her perform with the Indigo Girls. Their stamp of approval weighs heavily and Brandi totally deserved it. She's a powerhouse vocalist and a charismatic performer... lanky and lovely, to boot.

I downloaded her two releases (Brandi Carlile and The Story) post-haste and have enjoyed them thoroughly. Her latest, Give Up the Ghost, dropped last month and I'm just getting the chance to dive into it.

Her sweet spot --- at least for me --- is the mid-tempo, sentimental ballad. The meandering melody and melancholy of “That Year” is stunning as she contemplates the newness of an old friendship come back around with history left to lie in its rightful place --- the past. This one is up there with “Shadow on the Wall” and “Turpentine” from her previous efforts.

This CD has fewer five-star tracks in my iTunes ratings than either of her priors, perhaps because it jumps around the stylistic map moreso than the others did. I have a feeling some of the more raucous numbers would totally win me over in a live setting, but they haven't yet drawn me in via their digital renderings. Overall, it's still worth the price of admission.

There are a number of fancy guest stars on the Rick Rubin-produced Give Up the Ghost, folks like Elton John, Chad Smith, Amy Ray, and Benmont Tench. That's great; but, honestly, Brandi doesn't need them. Nevertheless, to return the favor, she is a very present guest on the new Indigo Girls DVD, Live at the Roxy. They even hand the stage over to her for an acoustic trio rendition of “Cannonball,” recreating the three-part harmonies that the Girls added to the recorded version.

In addition to all the musical goodness, Brandi is also a fine and generous citizen through her Looking Out Foundation. The organization gives grant money to all sorts of causes, from the personal to the political, and a dollar from every concert ticket sold goes to support the cause. Now that's putting your money where your very talented mouth is.

You can go here to see the official vid for the first single, “Dreams,” which includes her touring drummer and friend of Velvetpark Allison Miller. And if you can catch a live show, definitely do. Brandi will be back out on the road in January with my pal Katie Herzig in tow as the opener.

question

Probably not what I was supposed to take out of this blog, but how does one rate individual tracks in iTunes? I can only get it to rate entire albums....

Oh, and I'll definitely check out Ms. Carlile.

I'm going to hear these two play on Saturday. Laughing out loud

Oh

I was talking about within iTunes, not on the store. The little star ratings. I can only get them to work for albums. Sad

Weird

I have all of my songs rated. Does the Ratings column show in your iTunes browser window? If so, I just click there to select my rating. Alternately, you can right-click on a song, choose Get Info, and rate it in the info pop-up box.

Just figured it out

For some reason it was set on album rating rather than just being set on rating. So everytime I rated a song, it rated the whole album. Think I've fixed it now. Thanks. Smile

You can change them on an

You can change them on an iPod while the song is playing. Hit the center button until the rating screen appears. Use the scrollwheel to add or remove stars. In iTunes, go to View > View Options. Select ratings and then click and drag over the stars next to the song. I've never seen an option to rate albums so I don't know where you're getting that. You may have to change to list view if you're in album cover view.

I'm a fan of Brandi's but

I'm a fan of Brandi's but have only seen youtube videos of her performances (there are about a million) not a live show.  I like my tunes a little more upbeat than your selection there I think though, Kelly!

Lousy, In a Good Way

Even though Brandi plays all the time in Seattle, we're lousy with "secret" Brandi concerts, I still get a thrill out of her each time.  The joy of the Caroline track is just as compelling to me as the heartache of the Before It Breaks track.  Goddammit, Brandi and those twins sure know how to put together a song.

Secret shows are the best.

Secret shows are the best. They remind you that you're still on the inside even though she's gotten so successful. Enjoy one for me sometime!

She's actually doing a free show today at a local record store.  See what I mean?  Lousy with 'em.

Thanks for the article on

Thanks for the article on Brandi Carlile Kelly! I 've seen her perform twice, in Kent and the Madison Theater in KY. she's awesome live, not only a great musician but really down to earth and personable...she connects with the audience really well. Her band is great too (love the twins and the cellist) and what an amazing drummer! My friend and I were lucky to get to meet her both times after the show. She's genuinely sweet, positive and funny.

p.s.
And she's adorable too. *swoon*

Madison Theater

I'm impressed by the acts the Madison Theater books.  I saw Missy Higgins there a couple summers ago.  Another *swoon*-worthy lady.

It's a nice little venue

It's a nice little venue isn't it? My friend and I ate at the pub/ outdoor café right next to it before the concert. We had a great time there; we met and talked with a lot of lesbians while standing in line to get in. They do get some pretty impressive acts there. I'll check out Missy Higgins, thanks!
