Happy Oscar Nomination Day!
Personally, I have been too busy watching TV this year. I did catch Slumdog Millionaire and, of course, MILK. I'd be happy if both of these films took every award.
Here is a complete list of the Academy's nominees. What do you think? Any surprises? Should we start placing our bets?

I just love this game
I'm not much of a movie goer,
I'm not much of a movie goer, but am trying to rack up the heavily nominated films...saw Doubt but thought the ending was awkward and that even the great Meryl Streep didn't pull it off so well.
Thinking that Gran Torino was going to be nominated for something I went to see that. What a mistake! I cannot handle the extreme violence that Hollywood seems to love pumping out. It made me sick.
Now, I'm afraid to go see any of these, because people will say "it's not violent, not in any significant way," I'll go and then get blasted out of my seat and spend that night and the next day literally sick to my stomach.
Can anyone give me a run-down on which of these heavily nominated films IS NOT violent (lots of shooting, killing, terror), so that I may enjoy my movie-watching experience?
Fair play. I'm going
Fair play. I'm going with:
Best picture "Slumdog Millionaire"
Best actress : Kate Winslet
Best actor: Mickey Rourke
Best supporting actor: Heath Ledger
Best supporting actress: Viola Davis (Hard category!)
Best foreign language film: “Waltz with Bashir”

The studio has to actually
The studio has to actually put the movie up for consideration, it's not like the nominations are wide open to any movie released the prior year. They may have done that, but when it comes to the acting noms, Kate can't be nominated for best actress for both "Revolutionary Road" and "The Reader" so one of them had to back off. Maybe the studio pulled RR from consideration altogether to let Kate try for a win for TR. Maybe not. What do I know?
Ok Let's bet: Best picture

but what about Revolutionary
but what about Revolutionary Road? I've heard wonderful things about that... seems like it was totally snubbed.

The only movie I've seen this
The only movie I've seen this year is Slumdog Millionaire (I liked it!). I've been busy reading Grace Moon et al.
Still searching for the right brainy quote.
Well, since the Golden Globes
Well, since the Golden Globes are usually a good indicator of Oscar wins- we can expect "Slumdog" to sweep. Heath Ledger is a shoe in, it's all anyone could talk about last year.
Hathaway didn't win the Globe (despite the mistake on the website that said she had just a few days before the broadcast). I don't remember though if Winslet won it for "The Reader" or "Revolutionary Road" and I'm too lazy to check.
Streep gets nominated for Oscars for practically everything she appears in, but she doesn't have a very good record for wins. Odd, since she's arguably the most talented actress in Hollywood. I'd probably place my bets for best actress on Winslet.
One of my close friends went to high school with Viola Davis so I know he'll be cheering her on.
I loved "Milk" as well, but it hasn't done well in the awards so far so it's not a likely Oscar winner.
Just a few of my thoughts. I'm not typically good at picking these things though.
i just saw Rachel Getting
i just saw Rachel Getting Married, and I thought Hathaway was *brilliant* in the role. And also, while I didn't like Doubt as a whole...i thought Streep was creepily good as the nun. I had flashbacks to grammar school the whole time...
Thanks Kent. :) I thought
Thanks Kent.
I thought Heath Ledger gave a stunning performance in The Dark Knight. He was such an amazing talent and I'll miss him.
I loved Milk! It was such a moving and inspirational film. My friend and I saw it after Proposition 8 and Rick Warren, and afterwards we were in the ladies room and overheard some older women in their 60's (presumable straight, they were with their husbands I think) talking about how "things haven't really changed all that much since then."
All of the performances were great in that.
As for Mickey Rourke...was he wearing a body suit?? I barely recognized him.
"Fight Prime Time. Read a Book"
I would love it if Sean Penn
I would love it if Sean Penn won but I'm already betting on Mickey Rourke for Actor. I'd bet Kate Winslet takes Actress.
yay for MILK!!! <3 Sean
yay for MILK!!! <3 Sean Penn
oh and Jolie, even while playing a frantic mother is still smokinnnn; Changeling was an amazing movie.
The only ones I saw were Iron
The only ones I saw were Iron Man (enjoyed it) and Tropic Thunder (anyway). I'm out of the loop. Sorry, Kent! =)
