GetEQUAL Disrupts House Hearing, Demands Markup On ENDA

GetEqual seems to be on a roll. Yesterday Lt. Choi and five other service members, organized by GetEQUAL, chained themselves to the White House fence... again, and got arrested... again. And this morning GetEQUAL disrupted the House Education and Labor Committee meeting demanding action on ENDA.

The Advoacte writes:

Shortly after 10 a.m., GetEQUAL activist Robin McGehee tweeted, "About to disrupt full committee of Ed & Labor & deliver markers 2 Chairman Miller demanding markup/House vote 4 #GetENDA 2 @GetEQUAL."

The Dallas Voice reports:

The activists approached Chairman George Miller, D-California, and attempted to hand him a magic marker. “I don’t know if it’s because of the recession that you guys you can’t afford markers, or whatever the issue is, but in our community there are people being fired because they are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender.” Mitchell refused to take the marker but told the activists that the committee plans to consider ENDA soon. “We’re working on it as expeditiously as we can,” Miller said.

Another unidentified committee member could be heard voicing opposition to ENDA. “This is the problem with this. There’s no end to it. You’re never going to satisfy them all,” the unidentified lawmaker said.

Funny enough, yesterday the Washington Post published a somewhat accurate portrayal of the dissatisfaction felt by the LGBT community at large with the way Salmonese/HRC operates. The lack of HRC's strategic transparency coupled with its perceived privileged access to the White House (to make no mention of the six figure salaries, and designer clothes of its executives) have left the grass-roots community disenfranchised, leading activists to take matters into their own hands.

My attempt to identify the unidentified committee member

Tonight I did a "voice" investigation. I am about 95 percent sure that the unidentified committee member making the condescending remarks is Rep. Tom Petri (R-WI, 6th District), who was sitting next to Committee Chair Miller (on Miller's right) at this morning's hearing.

I found a youtube video that shows the activists at today's hearing. Listen carefully at about 47 seconds into the video to hear the remarks in the background:

Next, I discovered that the Education and Labor committee has an archived video of today's hearing on the juvenile justice system. It starts with Committee Chair Miller talking about the markup of the ENDA bill...his remarks that you can hear at the end of a youtube video showing the activists.

Now compare that voice in the youtube video to the voice of Rep. Petri when he starts talking about five minutes into the juvenile justice hearing video:

Do you think I figured it out?

That unidentified Committee Member

“This is the problem with this. There’s no end to it. You’re never going to satisfy them all,” the unidentified lawmaker said.

That attitude pisses me off. Since I am not in DC at the moment, I am unable to chain myself to the office door of that lawmaker. Instead, I used my anger to write yet again to my representatives about ENDA.

The problem is...

...that interrupting a Congressional Committee meeting tends to make more people think like the Unidentified Committee Member rather than help convince of the rightness of our cause. While I'm all for direct action as well as lobbying, I'm not sure that this is the way to make our point.

By the way, if anyone's interested, I did a podcast today where I took on this topic. You can find it at http://beckyjuro.podomatic.com or with I-Tunes, etc. at http://beckyjuro.podomatic.com/rss2.xml
