Gabby's Two (Not Gay) Moms

Gabby's Two (Not Gay) Moms

The Flying Squirrel captured our collective hearts last night after she won gold for the All Around Gymnastic competition at the London Olympics. Gabby is a spritely little thing, making her moniker most apt (in addition to just being cute, because who doesn't love squirrels?).

Gabby is the first African-American woman to win the All Around individual gold medal. (Prior to Gabby's team and individual golds, Dominique Dawes was the only African-American woman with a gold medal but in the team competition.)

I simply adore this little squirrel—and I think her hair is perfect because it is perfectly functional for competing in an Olympic Sport, I-thank-you-haters-very-much. And, even though she's Christian she's one of those transparent Christians; last night she said about her victory that she gives "all the praise to God" while he "showers [her] with the blessings." Heck yeah! She knows full well that Christianity is driven by egotistical capitalism. Loves it!

But I also love that Gabby has two moms: her birth mother, Natalie Hawkins, and her "second" mother, Missy Parton, who Gabby has lived with the past two years in order to train with the legendary trainer Liang Chow. And, even though Hawkins and Parton are not a (sexual) couple, they are a couple in another right, as "Mom 1" and "Mom 2" to Gabby, which is a pretty unique (even, gasp, "queer") set up.
