Economists Who Rape

I was actually going to ignore this story about IMF chief being arrested for rape in a New York Hotel last week Saturday. But the pathetic defense that Dominique Strauss-Kahn's pals, philosopher Bernard-Henri Levy, and Nixon speechwriter/political commentator/actor Ben Stein are un-fucking-believable.

Jon Stewart so aptly opined last night on how "rapey economists are." Oooooo this metaphor is so thick with possibility. I mean c'mon isn't that what economists are trained to do, rape? Sex, money, power, isn't that the perfect formula to take advantage of the "less fortunate." Weren't we all raped by fancy financial instruments just a few short years ago? Aren't we still being raped by titans of wall street, and the economic regulators who refuse to protect us?

In defense of Strauss-Kahn, Bernard-Henri Levy wrote an Op-ed for the Daily Beast:

It would be nice to know, and without delay—how a chambermaid could have walked in alone, contrary to the habitual practice of most of New York’s grand hotels of sending a “cleaning brigade” of two people, into the room of one of the most closely watched figures on the planet.

I hold it against all those who complacently accept the account of this other young woman, this one French, who pretends to have been the victim of the same kind of attempted rape, who has shut up for eight years but, sensing the golden opportunity, whips out her old dossier and comes to flog it on television.

Wow, right out of the male privilege playbook without any updates since 1952; blame the woman. Arrogance makes a renowned philosopher stupid real fast.

But I guess not surprising from a guy who wrote that the Niqab face-veil worn by some Muslim women is an "invitation to rape". Misogyny 101, rape is an invitation only activity.

Appalling.

The comments by Ben Stein in The American Spectator are even more redick. Stein writes:

The prosecutors say that Mr. Strauss-Kahn "forced" the complainant to have oral and other sex with him. How? Did he have a gun? Did he have a knife? He's a short fat old man. They were in a hotel with people passing by the room constantly, if it's anything like the many hotels I am in. How did he intimidate her in that situation? And if he was so intimidating, why did she immediately feel un-intimidated enough to alert the authorities as to her story?

I hate to break it to you but that is from this guy below, for realz.

Stewart's commentary is the only levity on this topic I got.

You start your entry with

"I was actually going to ignore this story about IMF chief being arrested for rape[...]''

Grace, you know you weren't going to resist. C'mon, you know you were gonna write something as soon as you heard the news. Admitting it is the 1st step to recovery, you know Wink

And this blog wouldn't be the same if you didn't have a "problem" anyway so don't get cured Smile

There are entire Will & Grace episodes out there that could serve as really cool quotes for signatures. Yes, whole episodes!

Stein's always been an ass,

Stein's always been an ass, but how can someone in the 21st century say "how can a woman be forced to have oral sex against her will if there's no gun?"  Is this part of that new definition of rape that ReThugs came up with?

And what an outrage to say she was suddenly so 'unintimidated' to seek help from the authorities--what kind of man thinks like this?  Another potential predator if you ask me.

Rosie, is that you?

There is something about your new pic that reminds me of Rosie the Riveter gone artsy.

Glad to know its not all in my head.

In high school I had a huge crush on a very cute, and I like to think very queer, English teacher who had a picture of Rosie in her room. Lots of daydreaming time spent with both of them.

Chesty Chisholm, if you're out there somewhere reading this, PM me.  Wink
