Eco Maniac: Cool Green Shit

Eco Maniac: Cool Green Shit

We've talked at length about how plastic water bottles are going to be the death of civilization as we know it. Some 60 million of them are tossed each day in the U.S. alone with only 14% being recycled. Lord only knows how many are trashed globally. (Remember that big, Texas-sized flotilla of plastic in the ocean I wrote about?) Well, in addition to the biodegradable cellulose plastics that are currently being marketed, a new idea may be coming to pass: Brandimage's 100% renewable paper water bottles. According to Eco Geek, these little devils “will decrease energy consumed throughout the product's entire life cycle. The paper bottles are shipped out in containers made of ecoboard. Before it is used, the paper bottle is flattened out which makes transporting the product more eco-friendly than moving plastic bottles.”

If you like to camp or travel to Third World countries, you might want to check out the SteriPEN. It's a portable gadget that purifies water using shortwave ultraviolet light which kills bacteria, viruses and protozoa. Alternately, you could get a reusable water bottle that includes a filter.

How about this craziness: biodegradable, flushable dog poop bags! I'm a little bit excited about these guys. Apparently almost 4% of landfills or 10,585 thousand tons of dog poop is disposed of each year. Poop in plastic bags will stay for up to 1,000 years without breaking down. Even biodegradable bags can have a hard time breaking down when buried in a landfill without oxygen. Flush Doggy says their bags cost about $5 a month, plus they give 10% to the ASPCA.

In the Why in the World? category: The lemon-powered clock is idiosyncratically wasteful. I understand that it avoids batteries by using the acid from the lemon juice in reaction to the zinc and copper base plate, but still... the research and development that went into it better be leading somewhere better.

And then we have the Newspaper Log Roller. Fires aren't altogether environmentally friendly in the first place, however cozy they may be. Envirogadget argues that “you could recycle the newspaper… but as long as the paper is from sustainable woodland farming, burning old newspapers is theoretically carbon neutral.” I suppose if we're going to build fires (and we are), they should be as eco-friendly as possible.

Another thing we never think

Another thing we never think about is: Paper napkins ...

Every time I get my lovely vegetarian pizza delivered *mouth waters* ... it comes with a stack of paper tissues.

How many trees are cut down around the globe, to provide us with these napkins? I would say more of them get thrown away unused than used.

I wonder if the corporate food giants ever think about the impact that their packaging waste has on the environment.

I was reading this last

I was reading this last night, Kel - and refrained from saying anything. I'm not quite sure that those paper bottles are green.

Yes, we need to decrease our impulsive plastic consumption - I'm just not sure if this is so green. I read the one comment on that site, that said what happened to carrying a glass cup?

And I agree.

It's like what the fuck happened to Dunkin Donuts and their use to be Coffee Mugs?

when I first started going there for coffee, they had a wrap around bar, ceramic mugs and dishes, and several dish washers made to wash those mugs. Now it's drive-thru and more space for take-out lines, with a few tables.

what if places stopped using plastics and paper as convenience? And started using the long term usage form. Like grocery stores not providing paper or plastic bags, and only the reusable kind?

Or like instead of getting drinks in styrofoam and paper, we'd get them from ceramics or from traveler's mugs.

It would start to make people think about what they are using for their means of tools, in this on-the-go society. We've become lazy because we've enabled them to sway us with convenience.

and they've enabled us to become slaves of the on-the-go life.

I'm guessing the dyes are natural. They wouldn't be so highly touted were they not.

I blather on incessantly about over-consumerism. Buying new things for the sake of having them is no good. Buying green things when you need to replace something is good.

I'm not talking about your presentation but i'm questioning about some ecologic capitalism, make you throw your hold stock in the garbage to by new ones "ecologic" fortunately, you Disentangle for us.

It remind me some french stand up comics pretending he was the president of the world company saying: we make a maximum money by messing the planet and in the same time, we prepare a plan to cleaning it after, so we could make even more money.

Hmmm? ... I do worry about

Hmmm? ...

I do worry about the 'toxins' that come off those various bottles - into the water we drink. Even those new paper bottles (that appear to come in different colors). What are they dyed with?

I've been drinking out of the tap (with a filter at home - and often without a filter when I'm out), for a year now and I've been fine - no sickness or death!

Sometimes the best solutions are the simplest - carry a sturdy glass or mug around with you in your bag . Old school style!

p.s - I remember as a kid - back in the 80's, the only bottled water you could get at the supermarket was EVIAN ... and we used to scoff "Who the hell would buy water in a bottle"?!! ... "yeah we know it's French - but"...

At what point was society brainwashed - and by who?

I like the water purifier, though I want to know what the water tastes like when you're done purifying it. I don't think it could be worse than the tablets or drops.

The poop bags sound very eco friendly. The only thing is, I only have one toilet and I'm a little weird about animal stuff in the bathroom. I have been known to stop for a potty run at Walgreens before going to visit at a house with the cat box in the bathroom. Don't know if I could train myself to that one. Maybe I could flush them in the Clubhouse toilet.

Kelly, those items really are cool! I'd say more but I need to run out to replace a needed kitchen gadget. I'll drive the speed limit. Too far to walk.
