The Center for Sex & Culture was founded in 2000 by Dr Carol Queen and Dr Robert Lawrence. CSC is an archive, library, gallery and community space for preserving and sharing information and artifacts of sexual identity, sexual products, and sexual ideas.
This Thursday May 9 the Center for Sex & Culture has been selected as one of the LGBT-and-allied charities to participate in national Give OUT Day. "And" says Queen, "if we are the Bay Area non-profit that raises the most money, Horizons Foundation will grant us an additional $5000!" That means any person's donation—in any amount, even $10—might be the gift that allows The Center for Sex & Culture to raise another 5 grand. Queen remarks,"We are so honored and excited to be involved in this project."
The Center for Sex & Culture is a three-time winner of the SF Bay Guardian's Best of the Bay award (including a win for Best Emerging Sex Non-profit, 2005). CSC hosts sex education workshops and cultural events having to do with sexuality for adults of every orientation and gender, spanning the continuum from didactic to experiential. It maintains a sexuality library, archive and gallery, and supports sex-related research projects. CSC is a 501(c)(3) educational organization.
The collection includes historical material (primarily but not entirely sexual) that represents many separate but overlapping sexual subcultures. These include, but are not limited to: the Leather/BDSM community; the interrelated porn and swing/swap renaissances of the 1990s when trans issues were less clearly and vehemently separated from sexual issues than they are today; and the various feminist movements focused on women’s sexual agency and sexual health. It also includes The bulk of the Larry Townsend estate and Patrick Califia’s extensive archive. http://www.sexandculture.org/lbry
About Give OUT Day and what you need to do for your donation to count toward the fundraising total: ON May 9 (this is a one-day fund drive, and 5/9 is that day), go to our page at the fundraising website Razoo and donate! Simple as that! Since we are a 501(c)(3) non-profit, your gift will be tax-deductible.
What will we do with your gift? It will go towards getting hot water in our space, helping to develop the archives, paying down the debt from having to move two years ago, and paying this year's insurance.
