Brokeback Church Update

Brokeback Church Update

Rachel Maddow poked her metaphorical finger into the metaphorical eye of Pastor Warren last night. Maddow continues to deconstruct Rick Warren likening him to Obama's former Rev. Jeremiah Wright, recounting the damage control Obama had to run after Wright appeared one too many times in public expressing his views.

*Sarah Ponser of the Nation wrote in her latest article, "What's the Matter With Rick Warren?" Ponser sites that Warren has compared abortion to the Holocaust, believes that women should be subservient to men, and has backed the assassination of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Isn’t the first commandment in that Holy Book, Thou Shall Not Kill? Less surprising is that Warren does not believe in evolution. With Obama’s emphasis on science and education in his new administration, does this not fly in the face of reason?

I actually find Rev Wright less offensive than Pastor Warren, at least Wright backs his statements up with historical fact and does not rely upon easily misconstrued Biblical interpretations. What both these men clearly have in common is huge egos. There is nothing more un-Godly than watching blustering pontificators preen and crow about their beliefs, lording it over the rest of us. Obama seems to be able to choose a cabinet of effectual people why can't he choose a decent preacher?

[*editor's correction. it was Katha Pollitt who appeared on the Rachel Maddow Show. Poser does cover in her article many of the points that Pollitt discussed with Maddow last night.]

Sorry if I ever came across

Sorry if I ever came across that way. Double-sorry actually. Just bugs me when people feel free to make critical comment about a book they never read cover to cover, or sometimes don't even own. (Obviously not including you, Minn.!) I rather suspect Mr. Warren is not too familiar with his copy.....

Merry Christmas y'all - however you celebrate it!

What is sad about christians who make a statement and vow that that is their belief then change the statement when they see an opportunity for personal gain. It makes me wonder how the christians would feel if God changes his statements on judgement day.

I'm still in disbelief that Obama made this move ...

Is it naivity? Does he have some fantasy of winning over the evangelicals?

Part of me doesn't want to entertain the thought that he might be a closet homophobe ...

But then he doesn't believe in gay marriage ... yet he said he is "a fierce advocate for EQUALITY of gay and lesbian Americans" hmmm

The correct term is Tanakh,

The correct term is Tanakh, which consists of the Torah (teachings and laws), Nevi'im (historical, prophets, rulers, and such), and Ketuvim (various other writings and prose).

The five books specific to Moses are known as the Pentateuch, or alternately, The Torah. This is where the Law of Moses is given and expanded upon, as well as the genealogical data. It is also referred to occasionally as The Covenant. It is considered the most important and revered part of all Hebrew writings, since it is claimed to have been given by God directly to Moses. This section of the Tanakh is what many refer to when they use the name "Jewish Bible." However, growing up, I never once heard any of the rabbis refer to it as the "Jewish Bible." I only started hearing the term in the last decade or so, and just assumed this is what is being referred to, especially with the Christian evangelical focus on Genesis, Exodus, and Leviticus lately.

The rest was given less significance, because it was considered "inspired by God," not directly dictated to them from God, as is the assumption in the case of Moses. This is not to say it is unimportant, just not as important.

This is at least how my grandfather explained it to me. I was never particularly orthodox growing up, but it was my grandparents' faith, and I had to learn enough about it to be respectful of it.

Obama has proven to be yet

Obama has proven to be yet another politician. His sole motivation, now that he has gone as far as he can in politics, is to get through this term and win a second one.

He didn't get my vote for this term, nor will he get it for his second try, especially after this mess. Geez, give me the good ol' days when the worst you had to worry about from a President was them lying about getting it on at work.

1. I told you so.

2. Don't blame me, I voted for McKinney!

Actually, Grace, the First

Actually, Grace, the First Commandment is:

"I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; Do not have any other gods before me."

"You shall not murder" is the Sixth Commandment.

The first five Commandments are how we are to deal with God, the next five how we are to deal with one another.

CA_Medicine_Woman's picture

Actually, Jesus gave two

Actually, Jesus gave two commandments:

"Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." - Matt 22:36-40 (NIV)

Also, there is only one Bible, with a few dozen versions. The Hebrew "Bible" is called The Torah.

for the record... although

for the record... although why we should care! ...the Bible comes in 2 flavors: Jewish and Christian. Christ doesn't appear in the Old Testament, only the New Testament, and Jews don't call their bible "old" because Jesus is not their Redeemer.

Jews have 10 commandments. Christians have one: Love thy neighbor as thyself. they tend to lose sight of this teaching and veer off into very Old Testamentish temper tantrums and stone-throwing. it's a sorry sight.

I've been watching Rachel go after this one, too. She's doing a good job of it, but it seems the rest of the MSM is letting it drift (or am I not paying attention?)

About the "Thou shalt not kill" commandment, it's down the list a bit. The first commandment (as I recall) is about loving the lord thy god with all thy heart and all thy soul or something like that. I don't have a bible or I'd look it up. Point being all of this stuff the evangelicals are throwing out there is SO not a part of what I believe was intended in those teachings. I'm not a Christian, so I don't really get all of this, but for godsakes, can't they focus on their own shit and leave everybody else alone?

Grace! Wright's "historical facts" are often sorely WRONG! (or should I say he's rarely wright? git it? haha) But i absolutely agree on the ego thing, which is what makes this parade of cave-dwelling grotesque baboons highly entertaining, if only it weren't for the very real damage they cause. We can count on their gaffes, their SELF-presentations, their lack of self-control and their primitive me-want-more-pizza-gimme-gimme-drool.

and you sure were right about the food fixation. It's worth checking out the Saddleback site. You find out all kinds of neat stuff: like what saddleback wimminfolk do when they get together!

"Community: Women: Girls Night Out

Imagine what we could do together! Come hang out for an evening with the girls. THee times a year we come together to giggle, cry, laugh, pray, worship, hear inspiring teaching, eat chocolate, and catch up with friends and be reminded that ....
You were created for influence!"

most important: EAT CHOCOLATE

no - really most important: YOU WERE CREATED TO INFLUENCE

****************

This was a political ploy to continue romancing the right. Apparently Obama doesn't have enough confidence in himself, his staff, his cabinet or the congress to let loose of these crazies. The fact that we and all women got thrown under the bus again is well for him ill relevant. He won the election, we're expendable. Teflon Barry truly believes he can talk us all back on the bus next election. Sadly for most thats likely true minus one that would be me..

Why is this such a big issue to me?? Because it was cold calculating, insensitive and just plain wrong. He has givin an internationl stage to this pompous nut case to recruit more nut cases and has in effect given THEM his blessing. Stupid, Stupid man.

He's not interested in a good pastor it's politics - nothing personal - he doesn't hate queers either. Obama I'm looking through you like a plate glass window and it isn't pretty.
