**Breaking** “The L Word” Spin Off: Alice Pieszecki Lands in Jail!

**Breaking** “The L Word” Spin Off: Alice Pieszecki Lands in Jail!

Okay, okay, I know this gossip has been swirling around for months, but Showtime Prez Bob Greenblatt spilled some beans yesterday. According to Broadcastingcable.com:

The L Word spin-off: It will star The L Word’s Leisha Hailey and will be a “very different, substantially different show” from The L Word, he says.

Hailey’s character Alice Pieszecki goes to jail, where the new show would be set. While The L Word, which will conclude as a series after its yet-to-premiere sixth season, focuses primarily on a community of lesbians, the spin-off would involve a broad spectrum of characters, including some lesbians, Greenblatt says: “It’s a big group of characters and there’s a few lesbians in that group, but it isn’t the exact makeup of what The L Word was.”

When asked if it is a “female Oz,” he says that was “not a bad description,” though it would not be as dark as Oz, the gritty, former HBO series.

Three guest stars appear in the pilot and may or may not go forward on the series should it get picked up: Melissa Leo (Frozen River), Famke Janssen and Laurie Metcalf.

Greenblatt says he expects to make a decision about the pilot, which he has not yet seen cut together, in the next couple of months.

Can someone tell me why Showtime is determined to spoil the entire sixth season of The L Word? If the writers were going for a mystery thriller based on who killed Jenny, and now we know Alice lands in jail, is there really any suspense for the last eight episodes? Oh my, do I see a shark down there?

Heeee Haaawwww!!! I think 20 minutes is about all I can stomach in a barnyard. Do I have to pay for that?? Sounds like they're feeding us a mess o' cow patties. The budget will certainly decline since they'll all be wearing prison attire each week. They can always accessorize. I wonder if they'll have to wear high heels as they're running around the barnyard?
I think that show will be put out to the pasture soon....and I'll be mooooooving on.

That's not what I meant. When those shows were on in the 70's and early 80's, I was a child. I assume you were a young adult and more into the dramas.

The 30 minute sitcoms were/are more geared for children. They're mostly comedies with light drama. The only dramas that I loved back then were the "Fantasy Island" and "The Love Boat" and "The Dukes of Hazzard"...and the more sci-fi fantasy/adventure kind.

"Dallas" was boring drama, back then at that age...and I'm still not into that kind of stuff.

And now as an adult, I don't find the 30 minute sitcoms to be entertaining anymore.

I have a lot of friends still

I have a lot of friends still in that industry who have the inside skinny on the current trend. It makes short term business sense, especially with the economy circling the bowl as it where. Scripted serials are expensive, especially if the show is a hit and the audience begins to get attached to particular characters. Add in all the new distribution technologies and related debates about residuals and royalties, well...

Unscripted reality, talk, and news shows tend to utilize fewer writers, smaller production crews, much smaller facilities, etc. Fans also tend to be loyal to the show, not the talent, since the latter (and mostly unpaid) tends to change every season. This eliminates union issues almost entirely, if not the unions themselves. That translates into huge profits. Given the transnational corporate nature of today's media, profits are everything.

I suppose AI might account for what I saw, since I'm sure there have been advances in that area since I left it a long time ago. My experience is limited in that area to military applications, along with some "chat room bots" applications (mainly security) in various IRC chat rooms. If it is true they automated the process, you would think they could do the same thing to police the site, respond to user inquiries, etc. Weeks of contacting them about security issues and I get no reply, but closing the account took minutes?

What a way to run a business.

Kate Moennig has a tendency

Kate Moennig has a tendency to keep her personal views of the world to herself, which includes her personal life. She tends to be type-cast into lesbian and transgender roles, primarily because of her androgynous appearance and mannerisms, so her fan base also tends to come from that spectrum of the population.

Trust me, though, she has other projects going on, including the comedy-drama film "Everybody's Fine" and the psychological thriller "Remorse." The latter promises to be one of her best roles yet, if the Hollyweird rumor mill is correct.

I personally had issues with the character Alice (though the actor is wonderful), mainly because I sensed a sort of phony-ness about her, as well as a double standard morality. That's probably because I know too many people like that, I dunno. Alice winding up in jail or prison is plausible with that personality type. I'm just worried about the male fantasy oriented factor of "lesbians in prison" that seems to be the direction the new series will go in. God how I hope I'm wrong on that, it would set lesbians and women back decades.

Rumor has it OC will be revived somewhat (forums only) to promote the spin-off and get fan ideas for future scripting. Personally, if I wanted to be used like that, I'd go back to dating guys, and that isn't going to happen in this lifetime, lol.

Hi BtFan, "Jennifer alludes

Hi BtFan,

"Jennifer alludes to things not working out all that well for TiBette or Bette."

FYI, when Jennifer Beals and Ilene were at the Nickel Bar in cleveland someone asked about Bette and Tina and Jennifer looked at Ilene and said something like (I'm paraphrasing), "I can tell them can't I...that they (Bette and Tina) are safe?"

Why so upset about the show and Ilene? I don't think she has spit on anyone. She brought Tina and Bette back together for the fans so she is listening somewhat. They've made some really bad choices IMO regarding storylines and character development....and I honestly believe they're shooting themselves in the foot with this whole lesbian prison thing, but hey nobody is perfect.

I was having dinner with friends last night and we were talking about the L-word and laughing. We have fun when we watch it. It all depends on how you look at things I guess.

As for the OC I really think it had to do with money problems. I don't see it as us being cheated or used by Showtime and Ilene. It was simply a business venture that failed.

Chin up BT Smile - xoxo PK

I would love to hear what

I would love to hear what Kate's (REAL) opinion is of the shenanigans of this Season - especially the way these L Word leaks (and OC) have been handled.

... Actually does anyone remember Kate? - God - she really needs to work her fan base a bit more ... how long has it been since she answered 5 questions on that fansite?? That used to be the highlight of my month!

I fear her career might fade into actor heaven if she doesn't start selling herself a bit more.

As for Leisha's show - a spin-off will only work if it's based on something believeable. Maybe I shouldn't judge so soon, without seeing it ... but I just can't believe that character going to jail (for any reason). Alice was too loveable, and I don't want to watch her like that.

Could be the age difference,

Could be the age difference, but the only thing about Dallas that I had liked was the weekly opening theme. I use to sit in the living room and play with what ever while my nana would sit and watch it.

I was a big "Happy Days" fan. I use to slick my hair back with water and wear my 6x white T (I had gotten my brother's hand me downs) and just pretend I was Fonzi in the mirror.

I use to watch, when not at my mom's house...those sitcoms. Mostly my mom would do PBS, but she would do "Soap" and "Welcome Back Carter".

I think I enjoy Ron Howard's work when he is behind the camera more as oppose to him in front.

Oooooh yuck gross! I almost canceled Showtime the first season with the Jennifer Beals ridiculous jailhouse farce. Come on Ilene, what drives your insatiable obsession with jailhouse lesbians? Cornering the pervert market???

2009 and lesbians are still being portrayed as criminal deviants by their own "peeps". That's just the positive image I want projected about "my kind" to the world. So much for shattering glass ceilings.

Speaking of glass ceilings...yikes I gotta go....I think I just heard a chard break loose and it's heading for my...[CRASH...scream..............flat line...............................].

Isn't that the way all those movies end: one dies and the other turns straight.

Viacom learned that the best

Viacom learned that the best way to kill off a popular series was to first make it unpopular. This has been a trend with them for about two years now, after CBS's "Jericho" had to be revived for a second abbreviated season do to fan outrage over its cancellation (the series originally ended with a fantastic cliff-hanger).

Seems the rest of the media giants are going the same route, slowly killing off scripted serial shows so they can replace them with cheaper and more profitable unscripted reality, news, and talk shows.

I'm going to be catching up on a lot of reading.

L-word related entertainment alert:

Just saw Jennifer Beals on the Bonnie Hunt show. What a very nice lady who really cares about LGBTQ rights.

Oh and Sigourney Weaver is starring in "Prayers for Bobby" later this month on cable. It's about a religious, anti-gay woman who tries to get her son to change from gay to straight, then becomes a crusader for gay rights when he commits suicide. It looks great.
