With Halloween now upon us, and the holiday season about to unfurl in all its gaudy glory, we TV fans all know just what time it is: November sweeps! Given longstanding tradition, that means that previously heterosexual female characters on hit TV shows are about to spontaneously combust into flashy displays of Sapphic yearning. And we know what to expect from these depictions, too. Like lesbolicious falling stars streaking across the nighttime sky of the TV landscape, Sweepsbians make their brief, bittersweet appearances, and then fade away forevermore.
It’s an old dance. We all know the steps. Your typical sweepsbian storyline is, at best, ill-conceived and poorly penned eye candy. At worst, and most often, they end up reinforcing hideously trite cinematic clichés about the nature of lesbian lust (i.e. equating it with death/evil/madness or tacitly serving up the message that nice girls can kiss other girls in college, as long as they go running back to men come December).
With The Good Wife, 90210, and Flashforward each poised to capitalize on the grand tradition of Sweepsbianism with newly introduced, Sapphically-leaning characters, I have discovered, in the most unlikely of places, a Sweepsbian storyline that is actually being handled with decent pacing, sensitivity, and a surprisingly affecting dose of conflicted longing. Believe it or not, Boob Tubers, this thing starting to develop between teenage superhero and former cheerleader Claire Bennet and her new college roommate on Heroes is LOTS of fun to watch!

Instead of culminating with one, this time it started with a kiss...
Two weeks back roomie Gretchen (played by Madelina Zima, Californication) surprised Claire with a kiss by way of admitting her crushy feelings. This week, the two found themselves thrown together (quite literally at one point, in the trunk of a car… HOT!) and forced to grapple with the attraction growing between them after they were kidnapped by their new sorority sisters. It turns out to be part of a hazing ritual, during the course of which they are tasked with completing a scavenger hunt in a creepy slaughterhouse.
Seriously, though. That trunk scene? Get a load of this dialogue:
GRETCHEN
(shy, but distinctly vixeny)
Well, look at us. All tied up, in the dark.
CLAIRE
(ironic, nervous)
They have entire websites devoted to this.
Just then a bump in the road

How about V (the new show on ABC)have you heard anything.
V
Hi DeeDee. I saw the pilot at ComicCon this summer and loved it. Without spoiling anything I can tell you that they stuck close enough to the original story so not to enrage the fans. There are also some nice twists and they updated the story to fit current times.

Okay. I went to Hulu just to watch this. I haven't tuned in to "Heroes" since the end of season one where I swore that if they ended the season by having all of the people meet up in that square to battle it out in some big showdown I was through. I made that announcement halfway through the season so that should give anyone who hasn't seen season one of "Heroes" some idea of how incredibly unimaginative the series is.
Back to my thoughts on the kiss. It was too short. Longer kisses in the future, writers! It did look like they were about to kiss again in the trunk. Of course since I read this I knew they wouldn't so that tingle of anticipation was tingless. Ah, well.
All in all- screw the rest of the show and the other characters and lets see Claire in some heavy girl on girl action! Alright, you can keep Hiro. I always liked him.
Sweepsbian
I have to tell you that "Sweepsbian" might be my favorite Julism so far. I had Janis (FlashForward) pegged as soon as I saw her reaction to her flashforward. I like that they've had nice little hints from the beginning and it wasn't a WTF? when she hooked up with the chefbian.

I was a big fan of Heroes in the beginning, but then it got really awful, but i couldn't help but watch! Kind of like TLW.This season is way better, and i thought they handled the Claire-Gretchen thing well too! Hopefully, it wont just be a sweeps thing, and we can bask in Claire lesbian glory for many episodes to come!
That trunk scene was super intense, i was screaming at the TV.

Yeah
Then they go back to man like good little girls.
I heard somewhere that once
I heard somewhere that once "Pushing Daisies" was cancelled Bryan Fuller was headed back to "Heroes" to clean up the mess that Tim Kring had created and try to salvage it. Maybe this is the beginning? One can hope that big ole gay boy Bryan will bring more like this cause... Hayden Panetierre kissing a girl? Awesome!
