Boob Tube: Faster, Lady Cop, Kill, Kill!

OMG. If you missed Christina Cox on last week’s Dexter, then you missed the hottest lady cop action this side of what happens in my head while I’m asleep. Like the rest of the lesbian nation, I have been enamored with Christina since her role as tomboy artist and dead sexy dyke Kim in Better Than Chocolate back in 1999. Heck, I even watched the entire season of Blood Ties on Lifetime a few years back because it was so much fun to feast my eyes upon the hotness of Christina from week to week.

And not only was she hot on Dexter, but she was GOOD! Easily the strongest installment of the show so far this season, episode four—“Dexter Takes a Holiday”—featured Cox as Officer Zoey Kruger (No relation to Freddy!), a police officer who Dexter suspects of murdering her own husband and young daughter in cold blood. In sleuthing Zoey out and discovering her to be, like himself, a sociopath and a killer, Dexter comes to grips with his own ongoing struggle to integrate himself into family life as husband and father. The end in particular was powerful stuff to watch, constituting one of the biggest character development moments for Dexter Morgan so far in the entire run of the show.

By turns flirtatious, hard as nails and downright brutal, Christina, as Zoey, ate up the screen, managing not only to hold her own against, but to steal scenes from the phenomenal Michael C. Hall—no easy task! I missed her in Defying Gravity this summer, but now I’m more determined than ever to catch that series on the internets. I guess ABC still hasn’t decided when to air the remaining five episodes that they have in the can after pulling the show off the air this fall. Doesn’t exactly bode well that there’s no new news on this more than a month after the fact, but one can hope that after her stellar performance last week, that some smartypantsed someone in the industry will take note of Cox’s awesomeness and cast her in something terrific, STAT.

We want more Christina!

Boob Tube News

BBC, FTW! I am so jealous of the Brits this week. Not only has the BBC announced recently that it’s putting together a six-part contemporary lesbian drama series, but they’re also developing a one-shot lesbian, 19th Century costume drama about the life of Anne Lister, one of recorded history’s first openly queer women. Apparently Lister gay married her lover and everything. Holy freaking crap! I am so excited about the idea of a queer female period costume drama that I don’t quite know what to do with myself…

Material Glee: While the interwebs are still abuzz with the sounds of Gleeks everywhere rejoicing that the series has been picked up for a full season, two new Glee-related announcements rocked multiple fanverses earlier this week. First, Joss Whedon (Buffy and Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog) has been announced to be directing one of the episodes late this season, and second, news broke just a few days ago that Fox has licensed Madonna’s entire song catalogue for a whole episode of Madonna tunes to air early in 2010.

To Watch For…

Sunday! Celebrity chefs Sandra Lee and Rocco DiSpirito pitch in to whip up a new home for an Illinois family who run a charity to fight hunger in their community on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, (ABC, 8 p.m.).

Monday! Claire and her Sapphically crushed out roomie find themselves in a real house of horrors during a hazing ritual for their new sorority on Heroes, (NBC, 8 p.m.). Lennie James (Jericho) guests as an old friend of Cal’s come calling in an old favor on Lie to Me, (Fox, 9 p.m.).

Tuesday! Halloween classic It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, (ABC, 8 p.m.). Courtney Cox on Letterman. Alicia Silverstone on Craig Ferguson.

Wednesday! Guest judge Natalie Portman throws the remaining cheftestants for a loop on Top Chef: Las Vegas, (Bravo, 10 p.m.). Time for a toasty holiday treat as the town settles in for a wholesome evening of witch-burning on Eastwick, (ABC, 10 p.m.). Madeline Albright on Craig Ferguson.

Thursday! A nation-wide talent search takes Liz and Jack to… Kenneth’s hometown of Stone Mountain, Georgia on 30 Rock, (NBC, 9:30 p.m.).

Friday! Summer Glau kicks off her recurring role as a Dollhouse programmer from D.C. on Dollhouse, (Fox, 9 p.m.).

1. Thanks for the heads up on the Beeb stuff - I hadn't heard about either of those!!

2. Talking of queer female period costume drama, did the TV adaptation of "Tipping the Velvet" make its way across the pond?  That was so good.

3. LOVE LOVE LOVE Dexter.....

The Beeb

We actually have Miz Cage to thank for those tidbits. She proved to be quite the Brit Boob Tubey tipster this past week! ("Brit Boob Tubey tipster." Try to say THAT ten times fast.)

And for us BSG fans...

Apparently, NBC Universal has opted to release the DVD The Plan several weeks before actually airing it.  The DVD goes on sale this Tuesday.  It is not scheduled to air until early 2010.

Rusty's picture

The Plan

They did the same thing with Caprica. I bought the DVD and it was worth it. I sat in on the panel for The Plan at Comic-Con and can't wait for Tuesday. Jane Espenson is the main writer. (And we're back to Buffy, Firefly, and Joss.)

PS: I miss TSCC everytime I see your avatar on the main page.

Yeah, I miss TSCC too

Dunno why Fox did the show that way, especially in the middle of a story line.  My brain went into hyperdrive with all the implications, especially with relative time, of the last episode that aired, and I wanted to see how the writers were going to work that one out.

Ooh, thanks for the update on that. I've been meaning to look up the release date all week. So excited to see this after listening to EJO talking about it at Comicon in July. Yay!

Definitely going to buy the DVD, if I can figure out how to get my rig into where ever it's being sold, lol.

Kelly, did you see the episode where the judges joked that the rule, "Everything tastes better with bacon" didn't hold up for one competitor's dish because the bacon overwhelmed the rest of the ingedients?

Kelly McCartney's picture

I did.

And I will say that, as a kid, I sometimes had only bacon for breakfast. Bacon has been the downfall of many a vegetarian. Pork was always my fave meat.

You know, Carla would totally win the vegan challenge if she were on.

Jules and Rusty, I'm not sure if I'm behind on this or not, but just read today that Dollhouse is being shelved during November sweeps, which may be the death nell for the show.

http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2009/10/21/exclusive-fox-to-bench-dollhouse-...

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news (if it is in fact news to you)...

Rusty's picture

not a surprise

We already knew this was going to be the last season. Fox "promised" to air all the remaining episodes. We'll see. I can't really blame them for benching Dollhouse for November. The ratings suck (unless you include DVR). And if my shows aren't on the endangered lists I start worry.

Be careful using online sources. I got a horrific virus from surf the chanel on my laptop earlier this year. I'd either NetFlix it or buy the DVD if I were you. The DVD has an episode that Fox was too cheap to air last season, too.

Firefly

It's another Joss Whedon show. And one of the reasons I don't trust Fox. They aired the episodes out of order and then canceled it before the end of the first season. It was a big DVD hit so they green lit the Serenity movie based on the show. Serenity came out the same year as Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and generally got much better reviews. It also won a ton of sci fi awards but tanked at the box office.

True; I probably watched at least 100 hours of programming with no problem on surf the channel. But the virus I got was so bad that I had to wipe my hard drive so I've avoided it since.

Project Runway

Julia, have you had time to keep up with Project Runway on Lifetime? I watched the last two weeks online. I'm not really thrilled with any of the designers this season. Also, I'd like $10.00 for each time Christopher's eyes well up with tears.

Julia Watson's picture

I stopped watching after one

I stopped watching after one or two eps because I didn't like any of the contestants enough to keep up with it this season. I am dying to see the Milla Jovavitch episode, though. I heart her!

I think the Top Cheffies are seriously lacking in charisma this season too, come to think of it. That one I keep watching because at least there is Padma and FOOD.

For real, though, what is up with the boring casting this year, Magical Elves?! Hopefully they'll have better luck with the lesbians...

Christopher is a big ole cry

Christopher is a big ole cry baby.  I loved Milla Jovovich on it though.

Dollhouse

Last week's Dollhouse might be my favorite episode so far. (Damn that Joss for making Topher sympathetic.) I watched it twice and still can't decide whose performance was more heartbreaking — Dichen Lachma (Sierra) Enver Gjokaj (Victor) or Fran Kranz's (Topher).

Julia Watson's picture

I am such a bad

I am such a bad Whedonite/Boob Tuber. I'm like, two or three weeks behind on Dollhouse and I've had to drop about half of my usual Fall TV viewing. Basically, I'm down from interesting/like/cool stuff to just the shows I really heart.

Grad school is kicking my ASS!

Rusty's picture

Too much crap on TV

I've cut back on my TV viewing mostly because I've been disappointed in both the new shows and some I'd already been a fan of. I have no idea what's going on in Hollywood, but there's too much crap right now.

I'm about finished with Heroes because I can't stand the emphasis on Sylar and the carnies. FlashForward still has my interest but mainly because of the lesbian FBI agent. Stargate Universe started with too many characters to care about. And it's too dark. I think they're trying to make it BSGish, but I miss the snark and fun of both the other Stargate shows. Still loving Amanda Tapping and Sanctuary especially now that they've killed off a majorly annoying character. But my favorites this season are Dollhouse and Supernatural.

We are star stuff. We are the universe made manifest trying to figure itself out. ~ Delenn

Julia Watson's picture

I really enjoyed the pilot

I really enjoyed the pilot for Flashforward, but I had to drop that one because I just don't have time for it. I figure that one will be really fun to watch on DVD next summer, though, when I actually have time!

Robin Rigby's picture

The big question will be if

The big question will be if Summer Glau's character on Dollhouse will be even half as cool as her terminator.

As for Cox (Christina, not Courtney) it's incredible that she is equally as hot now as she was 10 years ago in BTC.  What's really incredible though is that I don't own BTC so that I can watch the body painting scene over and over and over...

Lake's picture

Speaking of ...

Courtney Cox....I got bored at work and watched her new show...Cougar town....it kinda sucks...and I like her!!!     I liked her crazy show on FX...I can't remember the name of it....hmmmm Wink
