Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) has committed herself to keeping (or reinserting) pro-choice options in the health care bill.
In an interview with the Huffington Post, Boxer said:
"If someone wants to offer this very radical amendment, which would really tear apart [a decades-long] compromise, then I think at that point they would need to have 60 votes to do it," Boxer said. "And I believe in our Senate we can hold it."
"It is a much more pro-choice Senate than it has been in a long time," she added. "And it is much more pro-choice than the House."
"It's bad enough on the first count, but on the second count it seems to me very unfair and very discriminatory," she said. "I don't see them picking out anything that a man relies on, any kind of procedure that a man relies on. This is very discriminatory towards women."
"In all my years in politics, this is what it's been like," Boxer said. "This is the way it is. It always amazes me. The leading voices always, since I've been in Congress, have always been males. And that is one of the reasons why I think it is so important to have more women. Not that every woman is pro-choice. It is not true. But most of the women are."

good for her
I wouldn't say that most women are pro-choice though. A disturbingly high number are not. That's part of the problem.
Can't get to the polls?
Fiorina's another too busy to vote Republican candidate:
"According to Fiorina's campaign, she voted in six of 14 elections in California since 2000. She lived in New Jersey for the previous 10 years but never voted."

20,000 workers vs the $21.4 million golden parachute
Carly Fiorina v Barbara Boxer? Can't wait to hear Fiorina explain this away:
she was "dismissed as the CEO of Hewlett Packard in 2005 after a merger with Compaq floundered, stock prices plunged 50 percent, and 20,000 people were laid off. Fiorina walked away with a $21.4 million severance package."
Californians will just love another fat cat who screwed the workers but landed safely with her own golden parachute.

Give Pelosi credit
Too bad the pundits are screwing up the Pelosi story so bad. She didn't squeak by. She knew where the votes for the Health Care Bill were and released some of the Blue Dogs who will have trouble back home if they voted YES.The close vote was not an accident.
Pelosi and Clyburn (Majority Whip) remembered the mistake the Democrats made with Marjorie Margolies in either 92 or 93. She promised her conservative constituents she'd vote against the Clinton Tax Plan but at the last minute they needed her vote for it to pass.
She was pressured and as she voted YES, you could actually hear the ReThugs singing, Bye, Bye Marjorie, Bye, Bye, Marjorie, Bye, Bye Marjorie, We hate to see you go.
She lost in 1994.

Hey Rusty. Have you heard the radio ads for Meg Whitman for Governor? I know nothing about her but she sure is getting a jump on the race.

Meg needs the head start because she's got problems. Among them:
- failing to vote in several California elections

Not ideologically pure enough for the Republican base:

No CA politicians have earned their re-election.
Every single politician in Sacramento needs to retire.....
Including Ms. Boxer.
Boxer works in Washington, not Sacramento
Well since Ms. Boxer is a US senator, not a STATE rep and therefore doesn't have a darn thing to do with Sacramento I guess she can stay!

Carly Fiorina
Carly Fiorina is running against boxer. She's an excellent businesswomen, a breast cancer survivor and – I would imagine, although I admittedly do not know her stance on many issues – is probably a feminist.
She's made some unpopular decisions in the corporate interests of HP (laying off 28,000 US workers) but if her energy were directed toward fighting for our best interests, she might be formidable. She's worth taking a closer look at.

I find it extremely interesting...
that Carly Fiorina (ex-HP CEO) and Meg Whitman (ex-eBay CEO) are getting into politics - Carly running against Boxer for the Senate and Meg running against the many for the Governor of CA. Even if they both do not have platforms that I can abide, I do hope they are formidable opponents - women of America need formidables...

Huh?
Boxer is in the US Senate. She has nothing to do with Sacramento politics. With which of her specific votes in the US Senate do you find fault?

Okay, let me clarify for you Rusty.......
EVERY SINGLE POLITICIAN IN CALIFORNIA NEEDS TO RETIRE. THAT INCLUDES MS. BOXER.
Shhhhhh
Can you please stop shouting and calmly explain the specific problems you have with Boxer? She is one of the best friends the GLBT community has and I'd like to know why you have so much animosity towards her.

I think it is just as important to let our politicians know when we approve, as it is when they piss us off, so I just sent her a thank you note.

My understanding was that
My understanding was that Pelosi let that amendment come to the floor to appease pro-life Dems, that there is no intention to let the damn thing pass or become law. She let the lifers have a moment in order to make healthcare reform a reality. It sucks, but sometimes that's the most 'politic' thing to do.
Slightly off-topic, but would somebody please shoot Joe Lieberman? He's poised to be the sole senator standing in the way of the public option, not to mention his whipping up anti-Muslim sentiment with his irresponsible comments about the Ft. Hood shooting.
Boxer Fan
That's my senator. Boxer's been my shero since she marched (as a member of the House) into the Senate during the Clarence Thomas hearings to say WTF is going on here: From Wiki:
In 1991, during the Anita Hill Senate hearings, where Hill accused U.S. Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment, Boxer led a group of women House members to the Senate Judiciary Committee – demanding that the all-white, all-male Committee of Senators take Hill's charges seriously.
