8 August: This Week Belongs To...

Olympic swimming has ended and, save for the USA women’s soccer matches (take that, Canada!) and tonight's all-USA-women's beach volleyball final (which NBC will undoubtedly try to de-gay when Misty&Kerry jump-and-rub all over each other after they win), my laptop has been steadily streaming the UK lesbo-drama Lip Service, which I am just now watching. I know, bad lesbian.

If someone had mentioned there was a lesbian cop on the show, I would’ve tuned in much sooner.

I know we don’t recap The Real L Word at Velvetpark, but I will mention it from time to time—like, what-the-what is Romi thinking 1) cheating on her boyfriend with her ex-girlfriend (the newly sober Kelsey) and then 2) moving Kelsey back into her place the day after she breaks up with her boyfriend? It was like she had to do a SUPER-UHaul it with Kelsey in order to compensate for her fleeting move into Heteroville.

To pick up on last week’s Tig News: Yes, Tig has cancer...in both breasts. “Thank you, thank you, I have cancer, thank you, I have cancer, really, thank you,” is how she opened her set at the Largo in LA this past weekend. Listen to her talk about her diagnosis and her upcoming move to NYC HERE.

But, all this aside, who does this week belong to?

Pussy Riot, the Russian trio of feminists who are on trial (with the prosecutor demanding a 3 year jail sentence) for “hooliganism” because they sang a “protest prayer” at the altar of the Moscow Cathedral at the beginning of the year. Let’s hope the global community can exert some pressure on Putin and his cronies to ease up on these artists.

Kathleen Hanna wrote an impassioned blog, “Seriously they are in a fucking cage!!!,” about the trial of Pussy Riot over at her blog; of course it’s a must read.

On a side note, clicking through Hanna's website I happened upon a link for the "Bea Arthur Mountains Pizza" Tumblr. And, yeah, it's pretty awesome.

Speaking of great blogs, someone over at Buzzfeed created this USA Women's Gymnastics/Mean Girls pic-mash. And it's fabulous.

This week also goes to Hillary Clinton. Why? Do I need a reason? Reuters took a video of her dancing in South Africa—the Secretary has some moves!

Tomorrow Velvetpark will be hosting “Give Good Head,” a pub-watching-soccer-extravaganza at Ginger’s Bar in Park Slope, Brooklyn. 2:45pm. Be there or be not-there. Will Abby Wambach’s head rule the game? Will Tilda Swinton score multiple goals in a single match again?
