When I was twelve I went to this 4th of July party in the park with my best friend's hippie family. The whole day was filled with fireworks, food and fun. I can still remember wearing my brother's red, white and blue swimming trunks and running between the lake and food for hours before the adults realized I was a girl.
And I remember the music. There was this old school DJ who chomped on sugarcane and drank something out of a jelly jar. Everything he played set the mood for a really good time.
This playlist is made up of music I have heard over the years during the 4th of July.
1. "The Heat is On" – Gloria Gaynor
2. "Living In America" - James Brown
3. "This Land Is Your Land" - Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings
4. "American Pie" - Don McLean
5. "America" - Neil Diamond's
6. "American Girl" - Tom Petty
7. "Pink Cadillac" - Bruce Springsteen
8. "Lost in America" - Alice Cooper Watch it here
9. "Dancing in the Street" – Martha Reeves
10. "Summertime" – The Drifters

Gershwin's "Summertime" is one of my all time favorites! Great list! Happy Fourth, Laniaya....I took a 5 day road trip a couple of weeks ago - driving a diesel pulling a car trailer - lord have mercy the things you learn at truck stops - and tales to tell. Favorite tunes that kept the wheels turning and me steering wheel drumming: The Black Eyed Peas - "Boom Boom Pow" (Fergie rocks), Katy Perry - "Damn," Dave Matthews Band - "Shake Me Like A Monkey"
