this LARVATUS PRODEO business... whose tattoo? where? what's the relevance for french anti-royalists?

from René Descartes: Ut comœdi, moniti ne in fronte appareat pudor, personam induunt, sic ego hoc mundi teatrum conscensurus, in quo hactenus spectator exstiti, larvatus prodeo.

Larva means mask; or ghost. Larvatus, masked, a personality ? larvatus prodeo; it also means mad, a case of demoniacal possession. Larva is ‘the immature form of animals characterized by metamorphosis’; in the grub state; before their transformation into a pupa, or pupil; i.e., before their initiation.

This one didn't come across

This one didn't come across so well, i admit. The key thing is that this is a concept of OPPRESSION that helps us understand GENDER, rather than the other way around. in the moment, i wanted ALL lesbians to know the theory of intersectionality--it's so important to think about the ways that these pieces fit together!

Let's take another, perhaps questionable, route:

"I don’t know how you made

"I don’t know how you made the link between “not sticking to stereotypes” and “open minded” because I didn’t."
its true, i'm unfair, i was referring to previous discussion i'v read, but we all know how peoples beyond labels think right? Wink
"some very femme women don’t have all these feminine shapes." thats right, specially fashion models.

We'r all sort of mix but honestly, who care enough to stop at everyone and take the time to know who they are, how they think... So yes the stereotype are convenient to let the peoples knows who i am and how i wanted to be treated in the big lines.
when i'm not dressing masculine enough. Its like they look something else than me, they have expectation beside my point.

If I have to write gender and

Smile...life is good!!!

Dornac's picture

I don't know how you made the

I don't know how you made the link between "not sticking to stereotypes" and "open minded" because I didn't.
I am just asking about all of these stereotypes (yes, THEY ARE stereotypes).
I am not giving solutions.
But, as I can't personnaly make a choice between "butch" or "femme" (for myself), as you said that all butches are not the same and all femmes are not the same ("There is has much ways to be butch or femme than there is femmes and butches"), I say:
May be it's better not to stick to stereotypes.

And I still wonder about both definitions...

and by the way, I said "androgynes have no feminine body", nobody said anything about it, so I say it: it's not always true, and... some very femme women don't have all these feminine shapes.

yonks's picture

who talk about stereotypes?

who talk about stereotypes? there is not much stereotypes in butch-femme than in peoples who claim they are beyond labels.
If you said that being beyond labels make you more open minded or free, its a positive stereotype, who want to be close minded or confine?
But its a sophism because whats make you open minded is no the way you definite yourself or not but the way you allow others to define themselves (or not).
And whats make you free is to know yourself enough to make your own choices.

then allow peoples to know what your choices are, so you can work on a "social contract" small concessions on everybody's freedom, for everyone have room to express themselves .

You cant be open minded if your totally free for yourself, and being too open minded to every ones tied up your own freedom.

well, i guess it explain everything except whats make you a femme or butch right?

I read it the opposite way:

I read it the opposite way: that clothing cannot be counted on as an indicator of gender expression because it can be a cultural norm, at least in some instances. You have to look at the interaction of many factors and weed out those that are individual as opposed to normative of the society or situation, if in fact that is possible.

I do agree... (in fact)

I do agree... (in fact) Wink

But feminity is always defined like this...

yonks's picture

There is has much ways to be

There is has much ways to be butch or femme than there is femmes and butches.
Its not a matter of domination or submission, you don't dominate a femme the same way you dominate a butch.

I think its the kind of question: If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

The cloths and the attitude are the sound we make to attract whatever we want to attract. and we'r attracted to the sound who reflect an image of ourself who please us.
