The Right Message… Now Let’s Do It

Today is a new day. Do you feel it? Yesterday someone described that either you were cheering or you were tearing during Barack Obama’s Inaugural address. I was the latter. Sitting on the lawn of the Capital and looking up at the building shining pristinely under a bright sun, I had the sudden recognition that the two million people spread out around me were not strangers but my fellow Americans, my fellow citizens.

That this building we were staring up at, imposing and regal, was indeed our House. That tired old phrase, “by the people for the people,” came to life for me yesterday.

whitehouse_moon.jpg

I know there is no way to predict the future — and the skeptic in us will always question motive — but right now, I’d like to suspend that judgment and let the words of our new President resonate for a moment:

To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict or blame their society's ills on the West — know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy.

Yesterday Tami sent me an e-mail warning that anti-gay preacher Fred Phelps’ site has been visiting us:

Administrative Contact: Phelps, Benjamin. Domain GODHATESFAGS.COM, 70.184.229.59, 70.252.169.188

We decided not to ban them because, after all, where does all that hate really get you? Can you imagine so much energy spent stewing in one’s own anger? Spewing vitriol? What is the point? Don't they realize their hatred only emboldens us? We laugh at their foolishness as we keep each other's good company.

In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of shortcuts or settling for less. It has not been the path for the faint-hearted — for those who prefer leisure over work, or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame. Rather, it has been the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things... who have carried us up the long, rugged path toward prosperity and freedom.

I’m taking Obama’s words to heart because this is what we will continue to do here at Velvetpark. Let's put the promise of hope into action. As our nation moves to rebuild itself politically, financially, socially and culturally as a collective, I believe each community has the responsibility to do the same. The microcosm is a reflection of the macrocosm after all. On the news that OurChart will be going off line next Monday, and that OC will be redirected to the Showtime site sans a social network, to me, makes the point clearer than ever: Let's keep our community alive! I said this before — I think of my time at OC with fondness. We began something there that had not happened anywhere on the web before. We gathered to discuss and argue, to find kindred spirits and partners in crime. By finding community, ultimately we find ourselves. However, community doesn’t belong to a destination online; it exists in any place where we choose to gather. We create that destination, we make that choice. We are the creators and protectors of our own space. You have helped reignite the engines here at Velvetpark to create that community space, most impressively without the bells and whistles of corporate financing. And look at how quickly you did it. Again, thank you for your continued donations, which have helped us to keep going. I will give you more details on our plans just as soon as I can. If there is one thing I know about our community, it is that we are the doers, the risk-takers, and we are the makers of things. The commander-in-thief no longer rules our country; big business no longer owns our community space; it is all in the hands of “we, the people.” There is no one left to blame. We have no more excuses. Now is the time to roll up our sleeves and create the world we want to live in.

RM, you sound evolved in

RM, you sound evolved in these ideas and I applaud you that. I'm one who can love to the extent of forgiving someone their ignorance, but do not wish to engage in interaction with someone who carries hateful, violent energy. I will leave that to those who can handle it better than I can.

Community can't really be

Community can't really be killed. It is Sisyphean and just shows up somewhere else, maybe not OC but it will. I find myself the lone Lesbian contributor to a blog called fiftyisthenew about women growing into their fifties, in a sassy way. When we started about a year ago I thought I might be the wallflower of the group, standing out, standing alone, but I find we have more in common than we do not. Community. Not exactly the OC but community nevertheless. Going to add you to our roll call of favorite sites.

I didn't finish reading your

I didn't finish reading your reply, I just stopped because I have to say this before I read any further..

This isn't about giving the person attention. It's about moving past hate. The whole love the person hate the sin? It is about not shunning the person for the sin, but embracing the person to rid the hate. Love trumps all.

Very hard to do, but it is what most religions keep on saying...over and over. It is the basis for rising above the hate.

Shunning is not rising above it. That is why Grace and Tami, or whom ever, decided to not ban the Phelps clan. Because in shunning, hate wins - and thus we feed off those emotions in a very circle of hate.

If one has to walk away to collect one's thoughts...it's not shunning.

Not allowing the hate to win, would have been to say "Ok, I'll just draw you". Accepting him, the person, but not allowing the hate emotion to affect you...is rising above hate. And it is in effect changing hate...and stopping it in it's tracks.

We don't have to ignore one another....that is division. we don't have to shun one another...that is division and really hate in it's self.

hate makes us angry..it makes others hate. But...the only way to rid hate is to love the person.

I think not shunning Phelps or Rick Warren is rising above the hate. And I applaud Grace and Tams of being renewed in love and sharing this info with us.

We are not weak if we love the people who hate us.

Aw, now why won't anyone send me? LOL

Seriously, I've had, um, dealings with this group. They are nothing short of a terrorist group that lives to incite violence and destruction, and they very much crave attention. They also enjoy hacking into computers on occasion, which I discovered the hard way some years back. Even extremist groups shy away from this bunch, they are that dangerous and over the top.

I would recommend visiting

I would recommend visiting the Phelps site, often, for a couple of reasons:

1) It tells you what their message of hate is, and how they justify it.

2) They actually post their itinerary, complete with dates, times, places, etc.

3) Every visit sucks up their bandwidth, which costs them money.

Couple of rules, though:

1) Don't respond on their site, nor give them any personal information.

2) Don't click any of their ads (they have them occasionally). Do note who is advertising with them, if anyone, for future reference and to help make purchase decisions.

3) Don't visit right after meals, while intoxicated, or if you have a flash temper and can't afford to repair or replace your computer once you put your fist through the screen.

4) If you have a static IP address (one permanently assigned to you), consider using a firewall that masks it, they've been known to hack into computers on occasion. Make sure your antivirus and firewall applications are very current before visiting any hate group sites.

I regularly visit hate group sites to gather intel, most have no clue I'm doing it for that reason, because I just look around and leave. It helps that my IP address changes regularly, since I am rarely in the same place more than 8-10 hours, so they think they're getting multiple hits from around the country, lol.

Lezbeth you RAWK!!!!!!

Lezbeth you RAWK!!!!!! You're right. Ignoring ignorance in this manner was the right thing to do. The message needs to be clear to the haters that we will no longer tolerate their hate and ignorance and they will be weeded out and shunned.

What a great blog, Grace. Thank you.

RM, your suggestion is good

RM, your suggestion is good in theory, but I believe that giving someone who is this extreme any attention is to infer that his behavior is okay. This is a guy who called MLK Jr holiday "James Earl Ray Day" last time our class met. Then yesterday, he railed for awhile about Obama, calling him a Muslim terrorist named Hussein and ended his hateful spewing with some declaration that he hopes someone kills him. I thought about the many times I've heard people trash talk Bush, which gave me pause to consider how I'd respond, but no one I've encountered has advocated Bush's assassination. (Of course, there's a Cheney factor there.) But the trash talk about Bush was based on what he DID, not his race or some other label that didn't have anything to do with his behavior.

No, I didn't and won't be drawing him. I'm going to treat him like I treat my puppy when she barks inappropriately. I ignore. A person like that feeds off attention...it pumps him up. Our ancient ancestors shunned individuals who were antisocial or inappropriate. I'm going with that.

you have to respect your response.

there's that moment in dante's divine comedy where he lunges at someone in a boat (i vaguely recall) & then feels guilty for being a jerk but virgil tells him sometimes aggression must be met with aggression.

obama's embrace of rick warren is the opposite strategy: keep him close, where you can watch & maybe influence him.

at such moments, i find the i ching provides invaluable insight.

I don't think ignoring or walking away is always the answer - but sometimes it's needed. Completely ignoring or banning is burning a bridge...and a bridge is the only way to mend and rise about hate.

I was so encouraged by

I was so encouraged by yesterday. And today, his first day in office has him showing up as an entirely different representative of "the people."

Then I went to school (student, not a teacher). There's a bigoted asshole who, in a side conversation, made some racist comments, then advocated killing our president. I've learned to wait, hold my tongue and get my rage under control before I speak. Later, we had to pair up to draw each other and the pig volunteered to partner up with me. I looked at him and said, "I don't like you and I won't draw you." I look back and wonder if that was what needed to be said. I figure if no one "plays" with the hate-mongers, maybe they'll realize they are no longer running things.

All of this to say, godhatesfags.com is only one of many hate-mongerers. I'm just glad the leader the majority of the people have chosen is standing up as a man with character and dignity, not fear, not hate.
