Girl/Girl World TV Report: Besos a todos

When I first came out as a girl/girl TV junkie about a year ago, I justified my addiction to YouTube by telling myself I was practicing my German, my Spanish, my New Zealandese. Very few up-loaders included English subtitles so I kept a translation webpage open as I watched.

patriciavico-full.jpg

I learned the words lesbian, woman, and kissing in a dozen languages. (This helped in my YouTube searches but it also led me to some porn clips I probably could have done without... but that's another blog.) Anyway, my favorite word for kiss is beso and my favorite mujer que besa a otra mujer is definitely Patricia Vico or rather her character Dra. Macarena (Maca) Fernández Wilson. Vico joined the cast of Spain's primetime network drama Hospital Central in 2004 wherein she quickly meets nurse Esther Garcia (Fátima Baeza) who'd been a regular on the show since its first season in 2000. Maca is a highly driven pediatrician and like Carla Von Lahnstein of Verbotene Liebe, she comes from a powerful family and goes hard for what she wants. She manages to convert Esther in, oh, about five episodes. (Last year Italy launched a drama called Terapia d'Urgenza in which "Marina" and Esther follow a similar storyline. I think the Italian show was canceled but it is well worth watching my YouTube hero unikyou's playlist .

Now, as one of VPs resident Spaniards Cris S. pointed out in my previous post, Spain has not one but TWO current lesbian storylines on network television. The other show Los Hombres de Paco (2005), introduced tall dark and handsome Laura Sánchez as secret police officer Pepa Miranda last year and her object of affection is original cast member Marián Aguilera's charming C.S.I. Silvia Castro. Watch them hook up at the shooting range with subtitles thanks to lulila84 here Cris tells me the new LHDP season premiers this week. I should also mention the short-lived El Pasado es Mañana (2005) because it contained yet a third conversion story Marga/Aurora (thanks Advocate26). You see we do recruit! especially in Spain.

OK, you've waited long enough. Thanks to my YT heros ntoma2000 and rachelm42, enjoy subtitled Patricia and if you are patient and make it to season 14, you will get to experience Dra. Vero Solé played by Carolina Cerezuela – a serious fox in the chicken coup. Besos a todos and let me know what you think!

Is there any serie centered on LEZ ? I don't think so (if so, I will buy a TV... uhu no... I 'm joking) whereas it exists in England ("bad girls", "portrait of a marriage"), in Germany ("Verbotene Liebe"), in Spain ("central hospital"), in US ...

you're welcome !

just a little add : PACS is not a specific contract for gays. It's opened to everyone and fortunately used by everyone. ( i agree with you about the marriage institution)

LMZ! Thank you so much for

LMZ!
Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions and for all this information -- I didn't know about the PACS and the adoption issue and I have started reading more about them. I do know many LGBT Americans who reject the idea of "civil unions" because they are afraid it would entrench 2nd class citizenship even further. France seems like an excellent place to study that issue. I, for one, think marriage should not be recognized/regulated by the state AT ALL. Leave that to churches, etc., and let all people (straight or gay) have the same rights in the eyes of the government and call it the same damn thing!

As far as lesbians on television-- obviously from this blog, I am not satisfied with the type/amount of lesbian representation on US TV. But I will say that nearly all of the women on US fictional television (straight or gay) look like the L Word women so I guess I'm used to that in tv-land and I don't really mind it.

Or maybe I'm just shallow...

Thanks again for your comments!

I'm not sure Spain and

I'm not sure Spain and Germany are not invaded by american TV shows, too! you should ask Cris and AnneMarien

In France we have the PACS. we don't really need marriage to get the same rights as straight couples (PACS give the same rights as marriage to everyone, straighs or gays, just as the brit civil union contract). Marriage in France is not the only way to live in couple with rights.

The problem here for gay couples is about having children and it's a real issue. One in the couple can adopt kids but same sex couples can't get co parentality on children. (single people can adopt children in France)

http://www.tetu.com/rubrique/infos/infos_detail.php?id_news=12405&date_i...
it's a poll about the question : 54% French people approve homosexual marriage but 52 % still disapprove adoption.

Other explanation : we elected Nicolas Sarkozy in 2007. He stopped all the process toward total equality. All left wing parties support equality of rights in France.

But i'm not living in hell coz i can't see many lez on TV fictions. I prefer less gay on french tv shows who are not caricatures than shows like the The L word which portray people i've never met.

At least, in my country, i can see real lesbians living almost freely.

Hello there

Hello there Loveminuszero!
Thank-you so much for these links and for all the information about queers and French tv. I must admit I am VERY woman/lesbian oriented in my searches and I generally search for girl/girl relationships rather than just singular characters. Maybe that's why I have had less luck. Your comment suggests that France is more subject to the US television invasion than Spain or Germany -- is that true? It also makes me wonder about France and Spain with regard to the "old latin macho" aspect of both cultures. Do you have thoughts about why France is different from Spain (and Germany) about gay marriage? I am continually fascinated by the very complex (and sometimes seemingly contradictory) system of gender/sex/sexuality mores in Western Europe. Thanks again for your comments!

Soaps and serials productions are not a french TV tradition and we are "invaded" by american shows. maybe there're a few homosexual characters coz there're a few french tv serials !

Homosexuality is not banned from french programs. For example, last night on prime time, one of the five public channels broadcasted a tv film in which you could see a man having sex with another man. You can see homosexuals in reality shows, too (Nathalie et Samantha on secret story...)

there're many programs about homosexuality on ARTE (Franco-German TV)

and we have a queer tv (pink tv)

Sorry Dornac but Plus Belle

Sorry Dornac but Plus Belle La Vie is not a belgium show but a french one, actually the most popular soap in France and it takes place in Marseille, in southern France. You can see it every evening on french public TV (France 3)

http://plus-belle-la-vie.france3.fr/

(about bisexuality, i'm not sure gay people are more opened than straights in France. I heard very kind things from gays like "Bi are traitors, they don't want to choose" ...)

"Painful" is a little strong.

"Painful" is a little strong. I was disappointed. I am not the embittered type.
In fact I realized that homophobia was really complex because it is about sex, and people are not all totally ok with their own sexuality, they don't all feel at ease with it.
These friends asked me if I could be attracted by her. It sounded strange for me because I was sincerily sharing a friendship and they were really straight. They didn't like my answer (women! always want to seduce everybody!!)
Wink

TheInsomniac's picture

Hmm. What happened to you

Hmm. What happened to you sounds painful. It seems like maybe what goes on behind closed doors is all fine, but everyone should just keep up the appearance that they are straight and happily married. So it's not so much the sex, but the social relationships that are regulated. Kind of like

"ne demandez pas, ne dites pas."

Thank-you, Dornac.

I am not sure that we are

I am not sure that we are open about sexuality.
I had straight friends. They were ok with my homosexuality because, before, they saw me with men. So, a bisexual was OK for them. Since I had a serious affair with a woman, they left me. And before leaving me, they were saying "but, I know you are more heterosexual, I know you are not really gay".
since my serious affair, we lost contact. They were always busy when I called them.
Generally speaking, they do as if.
Gay groups are not really strong in France.
Being straight and having lovers, not being faithful in love doesn't shock (aspecially if it's the man who is unfaithful- if the woman is unfaithful, she is -giggle- a little "salope"=bitch- but just "a little", you see...). But gays...

I am not sure they are really OK about homosexuals.

TheInsomniac's picture

Merci to you for the

Merci to you for the information! France seems so open about sexuality in general compared to u.s. moralizing about Clinton's affairs, etc. Seems like there have been a decent amount of french films with homos. Why not TV?

Don't worry about your french, I give marks only to my students.

The first video is from Belgium (speaking french but not french- it's important because they have the North wind influence... cooler about Homosexuals, and we don't have it... not even spanish wind from our south), the second one (anyway, I don't have TV) shows a two women kissing another, and just after, one of them leaves and the other one asks: "What? Wasn't it good?", then the one who has left says that she is not gay (with arrogance and disregard)... and so on with all homophobics bullshits -supposed to be a non-assumed homosexuality- but really sharply.
Thank you. I didn't know it.

EXCEPT - and this is my concern after watching the "who killed Jenny" vid from Showtime - are we going to have to watch 7 episodes of Jenny being hateful to everyone? Hateful enough that each and every character wants to kill her? If so, that scenario - malicious doings - is not for me. But, hey! It's all going to be a dream anyway, right? It's the combination of so much power with so much arrogance and ignorance -- of all the people who should be sending a message of love and acceptance... (I'm a recovering Catholic--I'll stop now...) Learning languages... (hehehe)
so we have to wait some years before learning "lesbian" in Arab, Italian, Turk, Greek, Russian, Hindi, and (for you) FRENCH, etc. when they decide to accept homosexuals, and serie about (and for) them.

I remember an episode of Central Hospital when Patricia Vico is coming in the hospital after riding a motobyke...
I am mentionning it for all motobyke's fans, and... of course, she was very sexy.

I also remember that both actress received an award or something and they kissed on the lips in front of the public in a way SO REAL that you could think that they were both lesbian in couple.

Hi, THE! Sorry I missed your blog yesterday (I came back home late in the evening Wink )

Yep, we certainly recruit here in Spain! Laughing out loud

With respect to gay marriage, social approval would be certainly higher if the Roman Catholic church stopped its campaign on "saving humanity from homosexuals". Anyway, it's true that society in general is more and more accepting. A good evidence of that is the number of people attending the annual gay parade in Madrid (more than 1 million): it's amazing to witness how many heterosexual families attend with their children, giving the rest of the world a good lesson on tolerance and respect to diversity.

Oh! And I guess we could start a Spanish course here on VP, so that you can enjoy watching your "favorite" Spanish TV shows without losing anything while reading subtitles... Wink

These really are my heros for all the work they do/have done. Are you familiar with Gute Zeiten Schlechte Zeiten? The have a lesbian storyline currently running. Hm, I prefer Hanna's, but Susanne too is a lovely story. The best now seems to start with the refreshing Stella, lets see how this new story unfolds.

Honest, I think Carla von Lahnstein is an awesome woman, that's why I'm watching those soap clips right now.

But here some tips for picking up these clips on the net:

For Carla/Hanna with Englisch subtitles switch on youtube between „Mizkel“ and „CarlaFreak“ clips. Those clips of Carla/Hanna can be viewed complete starting on „Mizkel“s site and then swapping between her clips and „CarlaFreak“ clips. They are all numbered, so it's easy to follow.

„Mizkel“ too has some English subtitled clips of Carla/Susanne and again the gaps can be filled in by „CarlaFreak“.

Carla/Stella and Carla/Susanne complete and in German (with English summaries) is available on youtube by „bienchen1981“.

I think your comment is indicative of how highly deficient US television is in lesbian stuff but I also like these because of how sexually empowered and free these women seem to be in general. Yes, mam, that's what it's all about.....conversion.....getting "hetero" women to find their inner lesbian! Why, even Ann Coulter says that the Democratic party candidates win because it's the Democratic women that vote. So, if we get out there in the Red States and help those Republican women get in touch with the lesbian that they really want to be, or at least become an inner lesbian voter (the woman behind the curtain) all of our problems will be solved.

That's the answer! We all need to help southern belles achieve their first real orgasmic level of intimacy - "pin a genteel southern woman against the wall sex" for the cause.....help put a permanent smile on the belles.....

I will do my part,
