Calling All Feminists by Elizabeth Koke 11/5/07
On Novemeber 10th and 11th, feminists of all ages will gather at Hunter College for a landmark conference. The conference, entitled Freedom On Our Terms is being organized by the Bella Abzug Leadership Institute (BALI) which is headed up by Liz Abzug, the lesbian daugther of the legendary Bella who 30 years ago organized the 1977 Women's Conference in Houston. Freedom On Our Terms seeks to commerate the 30 year anniversary of this important moment in feminist history and to create a two-day community of feminists to discuss the current status of women and girls and to make plans of action for the future. The conference is sponsored by a long list of organizations including The Ms. Foundation for Women, Code Pink, and The Third Wave Foundation. Speakers and panelists include feminist superstar Gloria Steinem, reproductive rights activist Loretta Ross, and comedian and actor Rosie O'Donnell. And a concert on Saturday evening will feature grammy award winning singer/songwriter Julie Gold and the one-and-only Lesley Gore (yes, it's her party and she'll cry if she wants to!)
So alright. Enough Ms. Nice Reporter. Get your dyke asses there! No excuses. If that description wasn't enough for ya, on Saturday the 10th, the panel on queer politics will include our very own reigning queen of Velvetpark, Ms. Grace Moon, the amazing queer artist and writer Kate Bornstein, and my boyfriend, civil rights attorney Yetta G. Kurland. And the place is bound to be packed with hot feminist chicks including, well, me. So take a break from the blogosphere for the weekend and voice your opinions and concerns in the flesh. You can register online for the conference Here!
