The L Word Season 4 Premiere Grace Moon
Jan 8th 2007, New York, NY. Some mark the seasons by a change in the weather, but thanks to greenhouse gasses, it felt like summer here new york even though we are in the dead of winter.
For lesbians everywhere, however, we know what season it really is. Thats right, its the 3 months of ranting, raving, crying, analyzing and arguing about those fictitious women who have embedded themselves in our queer collective unconscious.
The L word / HRC premieres have become the official launch of each new season of the show--with cast and crew turning up at viewing parties along with thousands of women across the country.
I attended the L word / HRC premiere at Casablanca on 34th St in NYC a venue chosen just 24 hours before the premiere was scheduled to show. The club originally booked for the premiere got unexpectedly shut down by the NYPD just the night before. So kudos to GO NYC magazine and the organizers for manifesting a perfect venue to accommodate 1000+ lesbians in the nic of time.
I'll skip the run down of the show (read on below for Janine Avril's recaps) because we couldn't hear a thing in the club packed with all that estrogen, and I'll get to the appearances by Ilene Chaiken, Jennifer Beals and Marlee Matlin.
The crowd was so excited you could barely hear Ilene make her signature address of thanks to the fans and her introduction to Beals and Matlin. What I did hear was Matlin's emphatic proclamation that she was very honored to be in the show but that"the best part was that she gets to Fucking kiss Jennifer Beals!" A statement that sent the crowd into deafening applause. Beals graciously took the mic and responded "I've known marlee for 19 years, and while she sounds like she's excited to make-out with me...I had to teach her to use tongue!"
At the end of their appearance Ilene promoted her new internet project OurChart.com a website (part of which went live Monday) that has gotten the on-line community abuzz. A place where women can connect and show our connections.
At the moment the networking portal is not active, but from the demo It appearers women everywhere will be able to create the Alice Pieszecki modular interface seen on the show. I ask, will we all be drawing lines to our past and present lovers, exes who've become friends and friends who've become exes? Yikes, More drama that's all we need in our community. If the show wasn't enough--now we've got our realities to deal with?!
